    poor graphics in MC7

    Hey,

Anyone else get low quality video when playing through MC7? I can play the same file in VLC and it looks awesome but in MC7 it its definately lower in quality, for example, the edges are not smooth, the black is not black and slow moving images leave trails.

I have installed the shark007 codec pack and the 64 bit addon (which sorted the audio sync issue I was going to post about) but the video is still not great.

Anyone have any good ideas on setting up the codecs?

    Cheers

    Onboard Intel G43 Express chipset

Onboard video is well known not to work well with any high end video processes. A quality video card will greatly improve video performance.

E series mobo's and CPU's can and will do the 'E' job (reduce energy used), by clocking down (even during video playback) unless set to stay running at full power in both BIOS and W7 power settings.

This combination will certainly lead to lower video quality in MC.

BTW, what is VLC, MC7? (i can guess @ MC7)

As for the noted codecs, one of the biggest online scams today is using social engineering to have a user install a codec in order to play a video. Third party codecs are not required, should be uninstalled, and everyone should spread the word. Never install such. They are not supported and are more likely to cause issues than to cure them. Properly tested and verified hardware and drivers that are recognized and supported by the OS is the way to go, and not "Johnny's I can help" files.

Hey thats really interesting, I'd not considered the power consumption side of things... I'll have a dig into the BIOS and see what I can see. You may have just scuppered my plans of building a new HTPC using a mini ITX board with everything onboard and no expansion slots for a graphics card! Dam.

VLC is a media player from Videolan and is brilliant; It always plays everything in great quality with no fiddling with codecs etc :)

I'm surprised to read your comments on the codecs, pretty much everyone I know has had to install codecs to get videos working in MC7, I know my High def stuff like MKV's didn't work out of the box? How have you got those working?

    Cheers for your reply

I don't use them so cannot support them, I have never needed any additional codecs and they are not recommended, and, while not blocked are also not supported.

Windows 7 to support third-party codecs… like all other Windows versions | Within Windows

Of course, there is no direct reference to these codecs working within WMC. Also, I think it's a stretch to expect most users (not you video heads) to install and use such.

OK, it was a fair plan but all power options are set to full power and all tools for making the box more efficient are turned off. Its getting all the power its needs so thats not the problem.

    Any other ideas?

    Onboard Video

Are you able to run AERO?

    In red on this page:

    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - CPU Support List - GA-EG43M-S2H (rev. 1.0)

Please list your specific RAM modules used and their location in the slots.

    for hints at this see:

    CPU3D.com / Gigabyte GA-EG43M-S2H Motherboard / Benchmarks: Science Mark 2

    and the CPU support list:

    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - CPU Support List - GA-EG43M-S2H (rev. 1.0)

Do you have the E5200 with stepping M0?

I would try boosting the FSB with known quality products.

I would also like to see the performance of your onboard graphics:

    DirectDraw Test (for developers)

and last can you please type 'dxdiag' in the text box of the start menu and run the dxdiag test then save all information to file, open it, and cut and paste the data here, making sure there is no personally identifiable information in it... also

    see this post:

    audio video out of sync

    and do the same.

I posted about the exact same issue here: File quality worse in 7MC than WMP/MPC

I'm glad to hear that you have shark007's pack installed, and it still didn't help. Funny enough, shark007 told me to try installing his pack in my thread (but I haven't bothered with that, and now I know I won't).

In my thread, I have information about the colors. The reason why is that 7MC uses a more limited color space (and for TVs, that is the preferred setting). If you find a solution to this issue, pass it along, and I'll do likewise. I'm waiting out for more low-end graphic cards to be released in Q1 2010, and hoping that a graphic upgrade would help (as I also have stuttering/lag issues when I overlay a menu over live HDTV).

BTW, does HD TV look fine for you, and you are only having problems with file playback?
