Windows 7: video library does not 'update'

25 Nov 2009   #11

First, all DVD's are not HD, in fact, most DVD collections have only recently begun to include HD DVD's. HD and Widescreen and not synonymous.

.AVI files are Audio Video Interleave files, and could have been created using a number of differing encoding tehcnologies, many which may not be optimal for streaming over a LAN due to their filesize/bitrate. As such, if an AVI file is encoded with a specific encoding technology (or lack therefore) you would need to have a similar (supported) decoder available in your playback application.

Audio Video Interleave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :

..."even where the DivX codec was once popular (the Xvid codec has instead become the codec of choice among most of the file-sharing groups"

In Explorer, right click on one of the AV Files, select properties and review the Details Tab (Note: many of these fields are 'hacked' by some utilities)

AVI is unsuitable for anamorphically encoded video:

Anamorphic widescreen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, the lettbox format is there by design, and you may be able to stretch it using WMC's zoom feature, but depending on the encoding technology this may or may not produce optimal results.

If you have the original DVD, play it from your Xbox directly. If it plays in letterbox from there, this tells a story of this DVD (it's not HD and even if transformed using an encoder to widscreen, it is still not HD)

The AVI files play perfectly fine. It's just that the Xbox360 is not finding them when I add them in my folder. Never had this issue with Vista and the Xbox360. Frustrated
