I am stumped, I checked all my setting and they seem correct and when I manually try to update it dosen't work. I am also using a usb cable connection but I can watch tv through it so I think that is working ok. I have my setup to download on a 24 hour schedual but it still won't update when I try to manually do it, If I reinstall the hard drive to new it works for one day and then can't update guide.

Have you looked at the log referenced in the error message? What does it say?

I assume that the computer with the tuner is able to connect to the internet.

Do you have a firewall running? If you are, and you disable it temporarily does it allow you to get the guide?

    MediaCenter Guide

There is no error message. The response is "guide has been updated". Yes, I'm connected to the internet, I can view the channels. I am running two computers identically equiped, one has antivirus and firewall software, the other one does not. Same problem on both.

    Windows Media Center Update Log??

    Hey Whipple,

I have the same issue. When I try to follow the instructions and "right click the Windows Media Center system tray icon and open the Windows Media Center Update Log"... I find no "Windows Media Center Update Log" option. Is this an instance where MS provided wrong trouble shooting steps in their error messages or is it just my PC?

I think I once got it working from this state by following instructions at http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/p/81428/409445.aspx:

    0. Grant temporarily "full access" to the RSA directory (C:\Program
    Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA)

    1. temporarily rename the MachineKeys directory to MachineKeysOld

    2. create a new directory MachineKeys

    3. run the tv/guide setup in Media Center

    4. if step 3 was succesful, copy the newly generated key from the new
MachineKeys directory to the MachineKeysOld directory. It may happen that the
very same key already exists and can't be replaced, even by an administrator.
In that case manual appropriation of the file is required.

    5. Remove the new directory MachineKeys

    6. Rename MachineKeysOld back to MachineKeys.

    7. Restore the initial permissions of "Everyone" for the RSA directory.

Let me know if it works for you... I tried it again now that I have the issue again but no luck so far...

I have reinstalled windows three times and my guide still gets updates errors, this time it started after a couple weeks, it just says guide failed to download.

how many times do I need to reinstall windows to make it update?
