    Media Centre Error Message - Video


    Hi all,

    Can anyone explain what I need to do with this error message in order to be able to use Media Centre for live TV.

    "Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart windows media centre or restart the computer".

    I have an analog cable plugged into my new TV card (Its an older PC, Dell Dimension 3100) and I can see the TV channels using Win TV 7 that came with the card.

    Windows Media wont even play its own sample video without giving me the above error message.

    I'm a bit clueless as to what to do. Hope you can help.

    I have a very similar issue:

    I can record HDTV fine, however when I try to play it back I get the "Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart windows media center or restart the computer" message as well.

    The files play back fine in WMP.

    I fixed this once by returning to a restore point. Thing is, the ONLY changes to the system since that restore point are Windows Updates. I think I'm about ready to restore again then turn off windows updates and see if it stays in working order for more than 2 weeks.

    I was getting crashes doing certain functions in WMC under W7 x64. To fix my crashes, and hopefully it will fix you up too, is to go to 'Programs and Features' and Turn Off WMC and reboot. When back in Windows do a search for all folders with the name ehome and delete them all (better yet move them someplace else). Then turn on WMC in P&F and reboot for good measure even though I don't think it is necessary.

    I would backup any personal WMC stuff you have before trying this as they might get deleted either by turning off WMC or deleting the ehome folders. It's probable that some of them contain your 'stuff' and might be OK to leave. My guess is that deleting Windows\ehome\ is probably all you need to do.

Is there a good reason why MS don't equip either the media centre or the media player with the ability to play MP4's. I don't see why they can't play them,and surely it would be in MS's best interest if they could play them.
