Windows Media Player & Center, problems with .mkv files & .srt files

Hi All, I found this forum on the internet and I'm so proud to be registred on it :). Hope I could find answers to all my questions here and we could solved them together :) I will really appreciate!

So, I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Beta Build 7000 running on my computer (very proud of it, 90% of my 32-bit programs work just great) and I was wondering if Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center could play MKV files and for some videos with subtitiles (in .srt)... These are the bestest programs for me and I would like from now on to use them at 100%.

This is the codec pack that I've istalled : Combined Community Codec Pack 2008-09-21. Indeed, in WMP & WMC I can watch videos in .avi format, no problem for that. Problem comes with .mkv format... Again, in WMP I can visualise the video with sound, but in WMC there's an error that says that the format isn't compatible (PS : I can visualise the file in "Movie Library"). The question is how can I solve this problem?

The other think is that with an .avi video I can't see the subtiltes even if it's played in WMP & WMC... Of course the .srt files is named as the .avi. Can't figure out from where the problem comes...

If You could PLEASE help me people I will THANK YOU for EVER!!!

PS : Sorry if english's bad. Hope it's clear for You :)

Try the K-Lite codec pack, just Google it. I have run mkv's in the past but really do not use them at all now. I may have run a converter, it has been awhile.

As far as getting media to work with Media Center, I too find it odd that WMP will work and not WMC. Seems that the Center would use the same structure as the Player, but no.

I use WMP for stored m2ts, and WMC for vob, avi etc.. Both work well for the uses I need.

    Good Luck!

i found the best way to play mkv files in wmc is to install these's 2 files

    x64Components_v166.exe

    MatroskaSplitter.exe

after installing them i had no trouble with mkv files.
sorry i don't have the websites where i downloaded them from but i'm sure if
you do a search you'll find them.

Good info, you know I think I will give MC another go on playing 1080p material. Be nice if I can get everything working with MC. I like the remote, library, TV, on MC.

    Thanks!

in build 7048 wmc (play all) takes about 5mins to load
and sometimes don't load at all. it just hang's on me and
i have to end task. 7000/7022 both load right up no trouble at all.
but on the other hand the video's seem to look alot more clear.

goto your start menu then all programs then to vistacode
then 64bit tools click ( ffdshow video decoder config ) and on
the left side go down to subtitles and there's some settings
in there that may help you.

Hmmm still doesn't work . I think because it's a Beta version I have problems like that... Can live with it till Windows 7 x64 officially comes .

But still want to know, how do You people can view your subtitles in WMP & WMC?
