    Media Center wont play AVI or MPG files...


    Media Center wont play AVI or MPG files... Hey everyone!

    Hope im in the right place.

    Having an issue with my main computer, Media Center wont play avi or mpg files.

    They play fine in Media Player however if I ask it to play in media center the media center loads up as normal but it just shows the same screen as if I had opened it from the start menu... no error message no nothing. It just wont play these file types.

    Plays music fine, will play MKV files fine also.

    Have tried system restore, turning the feature on and off in control panel... and NOTHING lol!

    Ive got a laptop running the same copy of windows 7, I have streamed the video from my main computer to the laptop and the laptop plays it just fine in media center with no fuss.

    I have running Haali Media Splitter along with AC3 filter. The software is the same as on the laptop with nothing like ffd show or anything running. We used to have FFD show on the main computer but we took this off. The laptop has never had that but no issues. Have even tried putting FFD show back on but to no avail.

    This is really doing my head in, some films I like to use the stretch feature on old 4:3 films as media player doesnt have this.

    Anyone have any idea of what to do other than reinstall windows 7?

    Tried the Shark thing, didnt work...

    Dont understand how its stopped working, the laptop is fine.

    The Shark007 Codecs do not modify much from a default install.
    If you're willing to try again, here are some suggested basic settings...

    Open the x86 settings application using a rightclick on the shortcut and selecting ' Run as administrator'.
    Press Reset All in the lower left
    Help TAB, choose to associate filetypes
    SWAP TAB, Disable the DMO video codecs
    SWAP TAB, choose ffdshow for xvid etc.
    SWAP TAB, disable the Microsoft Audio decoder (unless you use LiveTV, then leave it alone)
    H264 TAB, select the divx codec
    Audio TAB, match your hardware
    Config TAB, lower boxes, match your hardware

    If you have an x64 Operating System, also install the x64 Components addon ...

    Open the x64 settings application using a rightclick on the shortcut and selecting ' Run as administrator'.
    Press Reset All in the lower left
    SWAP TAB, Disable the DMO video codecs
    SWAP TAB, choose ffdshow for xvid etc.
    SWAP TAB, disable the Microsoft Audio decoder (unless you use LiveTV, then leave it alone)
    H264 TAB, select ffdshow (not dxva) on the righthand side
    Audio TAB, match your hardware
    Config TAB, lower boxes, match your hardware

    If you have ts, or m2ts files choosing to disabling Windows Media Foundation on the SWAP and also choosing the blu-ray splitter on the MPG TAB will get those playing too. When choosing the Blu-ray splitter, you will also have to go to the MKV TAB and select gabests splitter because the blu-ray splitter disables Haali.

    Always remember, 32bit players use 32bit codecs. But on an x64 system, Media Center is an x64 player so you need to make the adjustments in the x64 settings application to have an affect on Media Center playback.

    Once you find your sweetspot, use the Save Settings feature of the Misc TAB so you can easily restore your settings after an uninstall / re-install. Uninstalls can only be performed using the button provided on the Help TAB.

    Seems very complicated, might just do a fresh install.

    Why has it suddenly just stopped working, it worked before without having to do any of this?

    Any ideas as to why its stopped.

    I'll have to consider adding a singleclick 'suggested settings' option. (maybe in the next release) Each of the option I suggested are a singleclick. Not to tough. And the fact there is a save settings feature, you only have to do it once.

    Although I have not bothered to track the MS updates, I am quite sure they tightened the reigns on the codec lockdown. About 2-3 weeks ago, I also had problems with AVI files and had to introduce a new setting, disable the dmo codecs, to get them working again.

    This will cover everthing except for the hardware setups. Nothing like one click solutions huh?
    This updated application will be released with version 2.3.3 sometime later this week.

    Downloaded lastest 32 and 64 bit installs. Installed both. Used "Shark007 SUGGESTED settings" on both. When I go into Windows Media Center and add the directories to the Media Libraries containing the mpg and avi files it does not see the files. What am I missing here?

    I may have solved my own issue. While videos do not show up under TV->Recorded TV or under Movies->Movie Library, they do show under Pictures and Video->Video Library. Kind of weird.

    The thing is when this wasnt working I would try play a file off the desktop but it came up with the error message. Yet alone not coming up in media listings on media centre.

    I did a reinstall of windows and all working.

Hi, will win7 media center play divx and xvid files natively without the need to install codecs or codec packs? I've heard win7 media player will do this but i'm wondering about win7 "media center"? Thanks
