Sorry for your troubles. No need to add the movies to MC. Close the configuration tool, and also MB, and download this file and put it here>>> C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\StartupFolder (this is a hidden folder). Once you have copied the file to the above location, and changed it to suit your needs, reopen the configuration tool and you should see your locations in the configuration tool. NOTE: Doing it this way eliminates the showing long list of locations, and all you see is one. Don't worry, all your locations are being monitored.
I explain the entries in the file below
image: C:\Movies.png- this is the image for your movie collection, remove this line if you do not want an image
folder: M:\AVI Movies 1\- this is where my movies are, edit to suit your needs. you must put the trailing slash.
    folder: W:\AVI Movies 2\
    folder: W:\DVD's\
    folder: U:\Movies 1\
    sortorder: 000

I think the cover art plugin is overkill, but that is just me. As for the subtitle, for me it down loads the wrong subtitle EVERY TIME. Its one thing to download the right file that might be a bit out of sync, but it downloads files that does not even have the same words, or is from a totally different movie. Example, it downloaded star wars- the clone wars for my beast wars series. It also downloaded a sub file from a totally different movie for my boondocks tv series. But I don't mind, I get my own subtitle files, and if they are out of sync, I use subtitle workshop to resync them.
    Zay,

Sorry for the need for some extra care and feeding here, but I have a few questions about file explanation above.
You have four folders. Can you explain why you have the folders you do? Why a folder named AVI movies 1\ and then another named AVI movies 2\? You mention that your movies are in the AVI movies 1\ folder. What are the others used for? I do have a number of AVI files, but I do most of my encoding to MKV. Is it necessary to designate a folder, as you've done above for each file type? For example, if I have a mixed collection of say, MKV, MP4, and AVI, should I have a folder for each (MKV Movies 1\, MP4 movies 1\, and AVI Movies 1\)? Also, why have a DVD folder and a Movies 1 folder in addition to the AVI 1/2 folder? What is the AVI movies 2\folder used for. I hope I am not missing your point, but I'm assuming the explanation above is an example of your setup, and I just want to understand your setup.

Thanks for the earlier replies. I posted several questions to this reply

    Hello All,

Zay generously offered the file in the 2nd lind of the paragraph quoted beldow, but for some reason I cannot paste it in the StartupFolder of Media Browser under Program Data. The paste option for this folder is grayed out and the folder shows "Read only." I've tried everything I can think of including trying to take ownership of the folder. I need some help figuring out how to be able to edit this folder.

    Thanks
    Warren

Firstly Wpoulson I really do think your trying to run before you can walk lets work on getting media browser working before we worry about fancy stuff like meta data and plug-ins.

First as I'm not sure what you have and haven't done may i suggest that you do a fresh install of media browser How to completely uninstall Media Browser - Media Browser Community Tracker, Once unistalled make sure you have the latest version of media browser but don't install it yet.

Right before we install it lets set up your film storage, I belive you said it was Drive O?

    so maybe something like this?

    O:\ Root drive
    O:\Movies\ Folder with movies in
O:\Movies\my movie 1\ Your first movie (in its own folder)
O:\Movies\my movie 2\ Your second movie
    ETC Etc

More details on how to set up media collections What is the recommended folder structure for media collections? - Media Browser Community Tracker

Now we know how that your media is set up correctly install media following this gudie (it has pictures as requested) How to add a Media Collection - Media Browser Community Tracker

Right that should be media browser set up and working inside MC remember that if you have MKV files you'll need to make sure that you have a way of getting W7 to play them this is another huge can of worms and we can cover that at a later stage if needed

@ Wpoulson, sorry for the late response, I don't get on here as much as I used to. The folder names are to your own liking. I chose to use the ones I listed, you can call your folders whatever you want. In your case you can call yours MKV movies 1, even if you have MP4 movies in it, if you like. The reason for the .vf file is so that MB does not show a long list of folders when it opens up. For example, if I had ten folders, (does not matter what type of movies are in it), then when MB add all ten movie folders to the config tool, you will see ten icons in MB. I chose not to have that (and you can have it that way if you like), hence the .vf file. Let us address the issue of not being able to paste in the startup folder of MB:
I need to you to take ownership of the MB folder that way sub folders will change ownership as well. Download this script. Once you have done that right click on the MB folder, and select the option to take ownership. Then right click on the MB folder and deselect the read only radio button, then accept the option for it to apply to sub folders as well. Quick question: when you installed MB, did you try to have the config tool set your permissions? That has never worked for me, it sits there, and does nothing, so I have learned to tell it no when it asked to set the permissions for me. I am not sure all you have done or not done, but sometimes starting over (believe me, I have done some starting over many times), is the best way to go. As bonez said, let us get your folder structure in order. If you decide that you rather have one icon in MB versus a multitude, then edit the vf file I posted in the earlier post to match your structure. I use revo uninstaller when I remove MB, that way it gets EVERYTHING off, then I start over. Metadata is easy to replace, so don't fret about losing it. After you have removed MB, and you have your vf file the way you want it, copy and paste it in here C:\Users\yourname\Videos folder, when MB is reinstalled, it will find it and automatically put in the MB startup folder. You will also see it in the MB config tool as well. Now if you have wrong folder entries in the vf file, you will get an error, thenyou will have to copy it to the MB startup folder manually. Like I said, don't get hung up on folder names vs what type of movies you actually have in there. What is important is that your folder structure, and path are accurate, and the names of actual movie folders. If you have the correct movie name of the movie folder, MB will find metadata for it. Hell, the folder could be empty and MB will put metadata in it if the folder has a name of a movie that actually exist. I love using media center master in conjunction with YAMMM for my metadata. Let me know if you need more help.
