PS3 connecting to Media Server on PC

I am trying to connect PS3 to Media Server. I have already established a wireless connection for PS3 updates etc...but cannot connect to Media Center. The system recognizes my home PC network, I am able to go to all the Playstation sites etc.. but I keep getting the following error message when trying to share files from the PC:
"Access to the Media Server is not allowed, it is possible that the system name for this PS3 system, "___ ___", has not been registered." Check the settings for the Media Server."
I have seen such as thing as a Media Center Extender referred to for the XBox 360, but not the PS3. Is there one? Do I have to purchase something else? I am trying to use the PS3 to access my PC for Picture and Music files. Any help here would be appriciated.

I do, however, HIGHLY suggest you dispense with the WMP11 or 12 server, completely disable it and go with PS3 Media Server

I use it with GREAT success, streaming, music, pictures and transcoding /muxing super HD movies with high bitrates.
I basically had to do nothing to get it to show up on the PS3 XMB. Installed the program, and 20 seconds or so, after the install was complete, I had the little green arrow up showing a new media server. I did have to mess with it a little, and a few other programs are required, depending on your desires, using subtitles, or streaming/transcoding FLAC audio files etc etc.

I have experimented with WMP server, Tversity server and now the PS3 Media Server



I rank them as follows:

1) PS3 M.S. (sometimes mp3's can give grief, most work though)(GREAT VIDEO SUCCESS)

2)Tversity (kind of in between, usually works for both, can give grief on both)

3)WMP (might work great with all music, not sure, prob will being WMP)(POOR VIDEO SUCCESS)

So do please consider these points.




Now this is only my opinion, and despite it's great abilities, like all programs, some people invariably have trouble.


If you do decide to try it, let me know and I can direct you to very useful guides, and threads that can help, as well I am helping over in that forum, so we could deal with it over there.

Just suggestion. Feel free to experiment.

Thank you for replying sorry I have been out of town for awhile. I don't really know which WMP I am using, it is the version that came loaded with Windows 7. I am trying to access the Windows Media Center in Windows 7 to share photos and music that I have on my PC. I have tried turning on All Media Streaming, then Show All Networks, tried to find the PS3 but am not sure what the MAC address is of the PS3 because they look so different. The address shown on the PS3 in the error message is PS3-796 which is much shorter than the ones shown on my PC when showing All Networks. Don't know where to go from here. Is it possible to share my music and picture files from my PC to the PS3 anyway, or am I way off? Thank again.

OK. I had to re-enable WMP and WMC in my features to figure this out, but I got it.

Make sure you have Password protected sharing turned off in "advanced sharing settings"


SO.

Click Network and Sharing Center.
Click Change Advanced SHaring Settings.

Under Home network.
Click Turn off password protected sharing.

on the same screen, Make sure "media streaming is on", "turn on network discovery" is on, Public folder sharing is on.

Now on same page (advanced sharing settings), click "choose media streaming options".

Your PS3 should show up on the device list, most likely labelled "unknown". To save greif, allow all connections for now, and turn sharing off to individual devices, as you figure them out. To find the info on each device, just click it's blue link, and properties show up.

To figure out the MAC address of your PS3, go into System information on your on-screen display (XMB) of your PS3.

You will see:
System software: Version X.XX
IP Address : 192.168.X.XXX (or whatever)
MAC Address : XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
Free Space : XXX GB

Take note of this MAC and compare it with the devices in "choose media streaming options"

As soon as I disabled password protected sharing, I was able to browse my WMP library.

Give this a shot. Hope it works.

Of course you can go with PS3 Media Server, but try this to get you going with WMP server as requested.

If you enable all sharing options, won't that open your computer up to lurkers, hackers and other creepos?
