Windows 7 & Xbox360: Delay in files appearing

When I add a file to one of the shared folders, it doesn't immediately show up on my Xbox. For instance, I can have a folder full of video files that all show up on the xbox, but if I add a new video to that directory on the computer, it won't show up on the xbox until (usually) the following day. This is very odd. I've tried a lot of different things, but haven't yet resolved this.

More info:
-The folder and all of its contents (except for the recently added file) are showing up on the xbox, so it can't be a folder sharing/permissions issue
-The file does eventually show up (and plays) on the xbox, so it can't be a file format issue
-When I move the file into one of the shared directories, it immediately shows up in my "Videos" library on the Windows 7 machine, but not on the xbox
-If I boot into XP, which has WMC2 running, I can see the file on the xbox immediately
-I know other people share media to the xbox using WMP, but seeing as my sharing is working except for one small annoyance, I don't see the point in using WMP - especially given that I've read dozens of posts from people having the exact same issue in WMP (ie files not updating to remote devices without them manually opening and closing WMP). Plus I just plain don't like WMP - I find it bloated, hobbled and not at all user-friendly.

Here's what I've tried so far:
-Rebooted the Windows 7 machine - no effect (did this multiple times)
-Rebooted the Xbox - no effect (did this multiple times)
-Rebooted the router - no effect
-Removed and re-added the shared directory to my "Videos" library - no effect
-Hit the refresh button (F5) in the shared folder and the "Videos" library - no effect

It seems the problem lies somewhere along the lines of Windows 7 not refreshing shared content over the network, or only doing it once a day or so. Does anyone have any idea how I can correct this? Is there some hidden setting that will change how often Windows 7 broadcasts shared folder contents?

Hey thanks for the reply.

I did restart the computer several times, which obviously would restart the WMP sharing service. As I mentioned in my original post, this made no difference.

TVersity works well for streaming to the 360, I use it myself

MyMovies is very good, provides all data and covers etc. allows grouping of series/sequals, well worth a look. will find and post link if needed/wanted.

Well, I installed TVersity, and I am sold. I can't belive I spent so much time trying to figure this out.

Having said that though, refreshing is still not instantaneous on Tversity - it can take several minutes for a file to show up. So its better than anything else on Windows 7, but still not as good as WMC2 was on XP.

Tversity is a very good media server,it has it's uses, but MKV file playback will be an issue for you. MKV with subtitles will be nearly impossible. Don't even bother with 1080p DTS large file videos.

I used it for about 2 years. Very Hit or Miss. Alot of unsupported data errors.

I recommend PS3 Media Server, and yes, it is compatible with Xbox360. Still in development as far as Xbox ,but many people have it working.

The quality of movies that I can watch without problems has skyrocketed since dropping Tversity. PS3 Media Server shouldn't need any extra codec packs. Just install.
I find it has a MUCH nice UI.


I have had them running side by side before without a hitch with my PS3. I have since ditched Tversity, but it is still a good product.


I can use tsMuxer option, and mux on the fly, HD 1080p MKV movies with a 95% success rate.(without subs)
720p is nearly 100%. (even with subs)


I have a backup copy of Avatar.

About 19 GB (not FULL Hd, compressed but phenomenal looking nonetheless.)
DTS audio.

Using TSMuxer, serving the file shows only about 8-10% CPU use, and about 15% network use.



Not trying to dissuade you from Tversity, just a suggestion to keep on the back burner.
