docx is the new format that office 2007/2010 uses for doc files. Essentially they are compressed xml files.
If your friends don't have these versions of office, they won't be able to open the files. I'd just suggest changing your default file format to .doc and then you won't have issues with people who have older versions of MS office.

Or use one of the viewers.
Perhaps you are not aware, but , if you are having serious problems from the recipients, you can also open the file again and resave them as .doc file and send again?
My users have encountered this quite a bit when dealing with schools. I find it amazing that Office users aren't aware of the file format change, and that people without Office 2007/2010 haven't installed the free (yes free) format viewer. But I digress.
