Getting there.....I can now associate Word as default program. When choosing a file to open, it now opens Word but not the file and a red X box appears saying "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

Thanks so much for your help here....but I'm afraid I have run out of time for today....hope to find you still online tomorrow....

"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

Yes, that is a problem i've come across before, please search these forums and also google because IIRC, it has been solved for many people.

If I'm not around tomorrow, somebody else will be.

Windows 7: MS Word not in default file associations list

Rename WINWORD.EXE, for example to WINWORD2.EXE.
Then set .doc files to always open with WINWORD2.EXE.

Thanks osteno. Renaming winword.exe to winword2.exe worked. Office 2013 overlays the Word association. Needed for conversions from Office 2003 to 2013. Then reset the doc file association until you're finished with all upgrades.
