Auto complete in Outlook 2010 not working consistently

Sometimes email addresses will auto-complete, and other times they will not when I am composing messages. It's quite irritating. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can fix this? Obviously, I do have the "auto-complete" option turned "on."

Thanks in advance!

I haven't noticed this problem so all I can do is guess. Maybe something's running in the background hogging cpu cycles. Have you noticed if it's only on certain addresses or is it just random?

It seems pretty random. For example, this morning, I started typing my husband's email address, but it didn't auto-complete. I eventually went into the address book to find it and populate it and sent the email. Then, a bit later, I started another email to my husband and started typing and it auto-completed. Grrrrrr!

I was having the same issue after moving from Windows XP Pro and Outlook 2003.

Unfortunately, the Outlook folders do not exist prior to running Outlook for the first time, so there was not any place to copy the original Outlook files or the .NK2 file. Consequently, Outlook did not automatically import the .NK2 file into it's "Suggested Contacts" folder or into its Stream-Autocomplete...dat file.

The end user had worked for some time to rebuild the autocomplete data only to have it quit working October 17th.

It appears that an iTunes Outlook add-in was updated at that time and for some reason, prevented Outlook from closing completely, which corrupted the primary .PST file, emptying the "Suggested Contacts" folder.
After copying his original .NK2 file to the proper directory (c:\Documents and Settings\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook), I ran outlook /importnk2 from the Start menu. It re-populated the "Suggested Contacts" folder, but Autocomplete still did not work continuously beyond Outlook sessions.

I ran scanpst.exe (usually located in c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 older). It found and repared several errors and "Autocomplet" is functioning again.

I think it might be to do with AutoSuggest not AutoComplete.
AutoSuggest uses a cache which contains a list of addresses that you’ve previously used.

A simple method to fill the AutoSuggest cache:-

You can directly fill the list again by creating a new message addressed to all your contacts at once. There is no need to actually send this message.

  1. Create a new message.
  2. Press the To… button.
  3. Select the contact list in the right top corner from which you would like to add the contacts from.
Examples; Contacts folder, Global Address List (GAL) or a contacts folder in a Public folder.
  4. Select the first contact.
  5. Scroll all the way down to your last contact.
  6. Hold the SHIFT button on your keyboard while clicking on the last contact to select them all.
  7. Press the To –> button to add them all to the To… field.
  8. Repeat step 3 to 7 if you have contacts in additional lists that you would like to add.
  9. Press OK to close the dialogue and to return to the newly created message.
  10. Close the message and press No when prompted to save changes.
Now when you address a new message the AutoSuggest feature will pop-up again.

It's worth a try. :)

Irene - this seemed to work. The question is.... will it still be working properly a few days from now or after a reboot? Here's hoping! :-) Thanks so much for the suggestion. I really appreciate it!

I am having the same issue with outlook 2010. If I type in a name/email and use that same name later in the day it works, or if I fill in a batch of names they will be available, however, after shuting down they will be gone??? maybe windows updates are the prob?? any more suggestions would be great.

Just did a quick test. Simply shutting down outlook is all it takes to clear the cache. I am running NEO Pro (an outlook add in). This could be an issue? No itunes on this compter. I ve read that itunes can cause this issue.

The add-in could be an issue. The only way to know for sure is to disable it via Options > Add-Ins > Manage (Go):

Try it. If the issue is not resolved, obviously, something else is causing it.

Good Luck! :)

Hi Jack, thanks - I take it you mean mine.
They - the legs - are somewhat older now than they were in my avatar.

When the dialogue box appears asking for your password, does it offer a check-box to "remember this password"?
