I too am having the same problem with opening 97-2003 excel and word documents. I know office 2007 and 2010 are supposed to be completely compatible, HOWEVER, the excel and word documents from my email WILL NOT OPEN, to be able to convert them. Everywhere I've looked on the internet for help gives the same answer as you, but your answer does not answer the question.

Try these steps:

1. Right click the 97-2003 Word file.
2. Select Open With from the pop-up menu
3. Click Choose Program.
4. Select Word in the Programs box
5. Check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
6. Click OK.

Now try opening the word files and see if it has helped.

Try this.

Open Word 2010

Click on File > Options > Trust Center

Click the Trust Center Settings... button; the Trust Center window opens.

Click on File Block Settings in the left pane.

In the File Block Settings right pane, uncheck (deselect) all check boxes and select radio button Open selected file types in Protected View.

Click the OK button; the Trust Center window closes.

Click the OK button; the Word Option window closes.

You should now be able to open previous version.

IF YOU MAKE CHANGES TO OLDER VERSIONS, don't forget to Save As that version -

- or do what I did and CHANGE the Office 2010 default 'save' settings to Office 2003 versions. This will keep your files compatible for other users who have not / will not buy into the Microsoft changes.

GEWB
