    Office 2010 problem

Hi all, I am a little baffled by my current problem. I have recently installed Office 2010 on my 64bit system. now the installation went fine but now ALL of my programmes want to open with office. I am unaware of how to solve this and I need office to finish off my Degree at uni. any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks MrMouldy

    Welcome MR..

A little more information might be helpful as to what you mean when you say "all of my programs want to open with office". does that mean when you try to open a .txt file, it tries to open with office? or when you try to execute a .exe file, it tries to open with office?

Also, filling out your system specifications might make it easier for someone to help you.

    Probably a file-type association issue:

Hi, sorry for being vague. Ok ill try and give a better explanation. ill use google Chrome for an example. I have an icon on my desktop, the chrome image has gone and is now replaced with an office one. Like this >>> http://iconhaze.com/wp-content/uploa...PowerPoint.png
I click the image that has appeared in place of the chrome icon. and a window opens up but it is office 2010. saying that it cant open that kind of file. WELL DUHH BECAUSE ITS A PROGRAMME. i have tried fille associations, system restore as far back as i can go but nothing is working And Its not just chrome its EVERY SINGLE PROGRAMME I HAVE INSTALLED. My system specs are Sony VAIO VGN-FW31E 64bit windows 7 ultimate 4GIG ram. Anything else just give me a shout.

ok, it looks like you have some association type of problem. And you have done a system restore as far back as you can go. I do have a question. If you go to the marble and select a program like chrome, does it run like it is supposed to?
You might want to run malwarebytes to check for virus's and trojans.

    Malwarebytes

download, run and update to a full scan.

Also, you haven't by any chance been running a registry cleaner lately have you?

Also, at what point in time did all this happen? after you ran some program or installed one?

    Questions..

Hi thank you for your detailed reply. when i click where the chrome icon was it opens up in a programme that at the top says microsoft office 2010. it says something about only being able to show pictures. when I do as it says it shows the the chrome icon.
I have already ran malwarebytes and avast! no viruses. (i scan every 5days).
I dont mess with the registry that stuff is dangerous.
And finally all of this happened immediately after installing office. when watching the installation i can see all of the programmes on my desktop chance to office 2010.

    Hi,

If you follow the tutorial link that Irene gave you in post #2 you can sroll the a download of the .EXE. Once downloaded, run the file as instructed in the tutorial and that will restore the file shell associations for .EXE. It is completely safe as long as you follow the instructions :)

something tells me that there is more to this than meets the eye..

Time for a complete re-install of the os.

I think there's something untoward happening as the registry key should/will restore the EXE to the shell executable.
