Office 2010 Home and Business beta 14.0.4006.1110

Just got into this today. It seems pretty cool, the programs stream the install from the internet, and it tells you when it's done installing by popping up a little window in the corner saying "Office can now be used offline".

Welcome to the Microsoft Office 2010 Click-To-Run Technical Preview Program for Home, Student and Small Business Consumers!

We are excited that you have joined this select group to be among the first people in the world to experience Microsoft Office 2010 Click-to-Run.

The program provides a first look at the future of Internet application deployment. It delivers the products rapidly to the computer via streaming over the Internet. The following Office 2010 desktop applications are included: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote

Here you will find downloads available for early, pre-release versions of Microsoft Office 2010 products.

Click here to get started with the Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview

Below, you will find a number of articles and downloadable documents with product information. We recommend using the Office 2010 Reviewer's Guide as the first resource to help you get started in discovering the new capabilities in the products. The Tips & Tricks will help you discover new functionality as you get to know Office 2010 better.

We encourage you to engage with our product teams and other Technical Preview program participants through the newsgroups. We will periodically post surveys for you to share your experiences that help us understand your needs.

By submitting feedback, you can actively assist the Office 2010 team to identify important issues and to help ensure that the product is reliable and meets customer needs. While we read every request, we are unable to send a response to each submission. We may contact you directly if we have further questions regarding your feedback.

    Thank you for your participation!
Can I use any of the Office 2010 applications before the install is complete?

Yes, you can use them while they are being streamed to your computer. You might notice some slight delays when using the product if they are not fully installed on your machine.

Does the Office 2010 products get installed on my machine every time I use an application or when I reboot my machine?

No. The Office 2010 products are streamed to your computer and installed once. After they are streamed to your computer the product stays installed on your machine.

Do I need to be connected to the Internet when I use any of the Office 2010 applications?

You only need an internet connection to download the complete product. Once it has been fully downloaded you no longer need an Internet connection.

What happens if I lose my internet connection before the complete Office 2010 product is fully downloaded?

You can still use the Office 2010 applications. But since not all of the entire product features have been streamed to your computer, your applications may have limited capabilities, depending on what has been downloaded so far. When you connection is restored, the product will continue streaming from the point that it left off.

I get an error when trying to open Microsoft Excel documents from my desktop or the File Browser/Manager.

This is a known issue. Microsoft Excel will actually launch but an error dialog saying "There was a problem sending the command to the program" will appear. To work around this, leave Microsoft Excel open and select the document again to be opened. The document will now open inside Microsoft Excel.

Which Microsoft Operating Systems does Office 2010 Click-to-Run Support?

    Windows XP SP3
    Windows Vista SP1
    Windows 7 (Beta version)
Windows Server Operating Systems are not supported for client installation

Does Office 2010 Click-to-Run support 64 bit Operating Systems?

Yes, it does. At install time the product detects which Operating System is it running on and installs the proper software for it.

Why does Office 2010 Click-to-Run not install on any Microsoft Server operating systems?

This product is intended for Home, Student and Small Business users. It is rare that this target audience uses a Server operating system for daily personal use.

I got into this, too. I was leery at first because I like installers. However, it seems to work great!

Actually can't upload it - it's a web installer. I'm not sure if it's keyed, but I suspect it is.

The thought of installing something that is ONLY web based is completely abhorrent to me. First of all, I don't like the idea of keeping stuff like I keep on a webserver. I make sure my business emails are kept away from the web, they contain federal tax id numbers, company financials, social security numbers and other detrimental things.

If Office 2010 is strictly a web app, it's all over for me upgrading.

I think you may have missed the point on this one...

All your files are stored locally and program runs locally (you can run without web connection). Just seems to be a different way of downloading the program and managing the technical preview. I imagine this give MS more control over what happens to their program and who gets it etc.

    Well sort of...
