Ah well, since it looks like there is going to be no resolution to this problem I think I'll probably scrap Office 2000 and use Open Office instead. I've tried it and it seems to work pretty well.

Ok, so I stopped using Word but needed to use it because my OCR utility converts to .doc and automatically opens it in Word. Having saved the doc I then quit Word with the usual crash and selected Close Program from the error dialog. When I tried to open the doc in Open Office I got a pop-up reporting the file locked by another unknown user. Same happened when I tried to re-open it in Word.

There were no other apps open on the taskbar so I checked in Task Mamager and found two processes running for Word. Once I'd killed those I was able to open the doc o.k.

So, Windows 7 doesn't appear to clean up properly after it detects a program crash.

I had a response from the author of the other software I mentioned earlier. He said all he did was re-compile with the Windows 7 libraries and it fixed the problem, so there has obviously been some subtle change in the way W7 handles program termination. I could live with that if it cleaned up properly. It goes without saying I'm not impressed.

    MJT

Did you ever resolve this issue?

I see that this is a very old thread, but I've been experiencing problems with Office 2000 applications (Word and Excel) reporting as 'not responding' and needing to be closed using Task Manager. I checked and found I had Word set for compatibility with Win7. I ran a 'compatibility check' and the system recommended XP-SP2 (not SP3)! I will try running both Word and Excel at this compatibility setting and see how it goes. I'm not excited about the learning curve for OpenOffice as an alternative.

    thanks

Hi baumgrenze, no I never did and I'm now routinely using OpenOffice although it falls short of Office 2000 in some features.

I tried running Office 2000 in XP-SP2 compatibility mode but this didn't work for me.

Might be worth checking that you have all available updates:

I already tried that. They haven't issued any updates to make it compatible with their later OSs, probably in an attempt to prompt users to buy their latest version. That strategy didn't work with me.

    Appcrash Winword.exe upon exiting Word2000, Windows 7

    Hi Gwaihir (& Baumgrenze):

I am now having the exact same problem. Word 2000 had been running (and closing) fine for 2+ years, but all of a sudden I started getting the exit crash requiring me to click "Close the program" on the pop-up. This started a couple of months ago. I hadn't made any changes to my computer or software. I assumed Word somehow got corrupted and that I'd need to reinstall when I had time. Well I reinstalled today and I still get the same appcrash.

If it had been a result of a Windows update, we all would have experienced the problem at the same time, so I guess it's not that.

Sorry to hear you never found a fix, but I'm thankful for your thread because you did all the legwork for me and presented the results clearly in this forum. Thanks to you and all of the responders.

It appears I have a solution to my particular version of the Word 2000 quitting error, we'll see how it goes over the next few days. After much searching and posting, I wound up at a Microsoft site with a FixIt for Win7 for Word problems.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/822005

When I first started the Fix it app, it said I had to close winword first even though Word was not open. However, I found four instances of winword active in the Task Manager (I had opened four Word documents earlier, closed them but Task Manager indicated the instances were still active). I manually closed them and ran the Fix it. Upon restarting Word, it now starts up quickly and closes without an error. Fingers are crossed...
    -----------------------------------------------------------
Below is the background on all the things I tried first that did not work:

I've encountered a problem running Word 2000 under Win7 Professional 64-bit. Word runs, edits and saves ok but when I try to quit I get a popup "Microsoft Word for Windows has stopped working"

Word 2000 had worked fine for several years until my desk top crashed several times due to the cpu overheating, later fixed by applying new thermal paste (computer was 5 years plus old). Now Word 2000 works fine in all respects until I go to exit the program when I get the message shown at the top of the post.

If I open a file in Word and then open a second file which causes a second instance of Word 2000 to open, the second instance of Word 2000 will close normally, strange. Note, the second instance of Word opens instantly, the initial instance opens with a 10 sec delay.

Excel 2000 works fine, no issues.

What I've done to date but with no improvement:
1 - Deleted "Normal.dot", the only *.dot* on the computer
2 - Did a repair of Word 2000 through Uninstall/Install in Control Panel.
3 - Ran FSC, no errors noted
4 - Noted that Word 2000 opens after a 10 sec delay, it used to open instantly. Suspecting some com issue, changed from my old HP 2010 laserjet to a new Epson inkjet, no change in issue.
5 - Ran a virus scan of all hard drives, nothing found (Norton)
6 - Ran a malware scan, same result

    What made a difference:
1 - Started Word 2000 without add-ins with the "/a" command and word 2000 will exit normally.
2 - - Checked to see if any add-ins were being loaded when started without the /a command, none listed.

I have not yet deleted and reinstalled Word 2000, perhaps that's next. Given that Word 2000 worked fine on my Win7 64 professional installation for years, there must be a way out of this.

That seems to have fixed it for me also. Thanks Bob423.
