Newbie Wich Office Should I Purchase?

    Hello,
I am new to this site. I am 37 and going back to college and would like to get office. Need some help please. I can purchase 2007 cheaper than 2010. Which product do you recommend and would I be just as good to go with the free Openoffice? Thanks for the advice.

hi cetrax, and welcome to sevenforums,

once you're actually signed up as a student, and have a .edu email address, you'll have access to student discounts from microsoft.

you'll be able to download microsoft office professional academic 2010 version for $99.95

how does this compare to your current office 2007 offer?

If your going to be a student with an edu suffix email, than you qualify for MS student deals....It's the best way to go. I recommend getting it with the backup disc, you just never know.

...or you could download it and save it onto a disc yourself, saving $15

If you live in the UK, you can get heavily discounted software from here: Microsoft Office 2007 Student discount | Office 2007 on sale

Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 can be had for £48, but strangely, Office 2010 is £10 cheaper.

If you don't want to spend any money Open Office is free and can be used with Microsoft Office documents.

I was thinking about purchasing some learning software for Office 2010 and there are a lot out there. Any suggestions?

Once again, we don't know where you live, but many people going back into education go for a European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification as a starting point.

You can get an ECDL text book from somewhere like Amazon at a reduced price.

    That's OK.

It might pay you to check on Google to see if there is a similar qualification in the US.

Failing that, the educational establishment you are using should have a supply of good text books to help you out.

And don't forget Microsoft's online help files, which are a mine of information. Many text books are just a rehash of these help files and very often just tell you how to do something with no background on why.
