'Fatal error during installation' when trying to open Office 2010

Hi everyone, I was hoping someone might be able to lend a hand

Basically my problem is as described in the title. Whenever I try to open a document I have saved, or powerpoint/word/excel individually, a series of boxes pop up in sequence.

First box says 'preparing to install' and quickly disappears.

Second box says 'Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Single Image 2010... Getting required information'.

This is then finally replaced with the 'Fatal error during installation' error.

This is on my 1.5 year old laptop running Windows 7. I've had Office 2010 on it since I bought the laptop, but it's only now decided to stop opening. I've tried manually uninstalling Office to try to reinstall Office, but I then get a 'Microsoft Office Professional 2010 uninstall did not complete successfully'.

If anybody knows anything about this and can offer some advice I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks very much.

Since you are not able to uninstall Microsoft Office 2010 manually, a 3rd party uninstaller could easily get rid of it. Run Office 2010 Removal Tool and use it to uninstall Office 2010, manually. Then, re-install Office 2010, this should put things back to default.

    thanks influx,

I just realised i failed to update the original post -

i think i have successfully uninstalled office 2010, however now when trying to REINSTALL, i get the same message - 'office could not successfully install'

can you suggest anything regarding this influx (or anyone)?

    thanks again!

Refer to this tutorial (Non-Sevenforums) in getting rid of re-installation failures.

    gargh.

I followed the instructions, but the problem persists. Office still only gets 1/15 through the reinstall before 'Microsoft Office Professional 2010 encountered an error during setup.'

    ideas?

    *problem has been remedied*

    received some good help.

apparently i had not successfully deleted everything that needed to be deleted. there were existing microsoft files which, when renamed, allowed a successful download.

very happy, thanks for your help influx.
