Outlook 2010 cannot change my mail view back to normal from list view

    Hello all,
I have a problem with my mail view.. I accidentally clicked something which changed my mail view to a list view.. like the first pic.. But i want it back as the 2nd pic, where i can see on a second line the subject ... I searched but could not find the option to switch it back. Does anyone know how to get it back?

You have changed the Reading View pane - here is how to get it back to your original:
Make changes to the Reading (preview) Pane - Outlook - Office.com

Just touch the 'View' tab and select 'Reading Pane' in the 'Layout' section on the Ribbon. Next select the option 'Right'. It should then be back to your preferred view.

    hello Irene,

that is not what i was looking for.. In my first screenshot i just took a screen of my layout.. I still have my preview next to that..

Just the mails in de first pic are as listview and have all the colums, "From", subject", "received" etc.. but in the second screen(that is how it was(purple square in screen))... you see that the mails are listed differently... They all have the subject on 1 line and the "from", "received" date etc... on the second...

I want that view of the mail listing back..

OK, I see what you need now. :)

If you right-click the 'Arrange By' box, then ensure that you have a tick against 'Date' and 'Show as conversations'. Date is the top-most item and the other is third up from the bottom.

By the way, welcome to Seven Forums.

    thanks irene,

i tried that already... "date" and "as conversation " are ticked, but that just merges the replies to one message.

But still doesn't give me the "2 line per mail view"... *sighs*...

That's odd, mine looks exactly like your second illustration.

Do you have anything 'ticked' in the list? If so, untick it - mine has only the two items mentioned above.

OMG... Irene... i found the solution... (someone on another forum helped me)..

single line view is based on the width of the message list - make the preview pane wider and it will go back to two lines or go to View tab, View settings - and in other settings button, change how wide the message list can be before it goes to one line.
Just made my preview paner smaller and voila.. 2 line appeared...

Thank you sooo much WISKE80, I was dealing with the same problem for days and thanks to your digging...you answered my question! It's funny how something so simple can cause such an irritation! Thanks again and thanks to Irene b/c I learned a few things from her responses too

another solution to the same problem

Hi, i just ran into the same problem (two years later) and expanding the view panes didn't help me. I had to go to the view tab then clicked View Settings>Other Settings> and under the "Other Options" section I selected the "Always use compact layout" radio button, then clicked OK. This solved my problem, I have NO idea what I did to deselect this option, as I had never been to this menu before. So I'm posting a very delayed reply in case anyone ever has the same problem as me and can't solve it by changing the width of the view pane.

    Thanks!
