Download FileTypesMan v1.61 - File Types Manager for Windows.

Open it, scroll down to .doc, right click it - Edit Selected file type (F2).
There you can change Default icon.

    Word executable:

    • Office 2007 - %programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE
    • Office 2010 - %programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE

You need to repair existing Office installation. That is the only proper way.

Control Panel - Programs and Features - Highlight Microsoft Office 2010 or whatever Office edition is there and click CHANGE button.
When new window will should up - select REPAIR option.

Do you have other software for editing doc files installed? Such software may interfere. Because usually, repair solves this kind of problems.
