    Word.doc has non-merging background colour

    Hello Everyone,

I use MS Office 2010. Whenever I copy something in Word from the Net, the background of the text carries the background colour of the web-page from which it is copied. Please see the screenshot below.

I used to get rid of it easily in Office 2003 and I am sure it should be quite easy to do so in Office 2010. But I have tried everything and I can't. Could someone please show me how to do it so that the background colour becomes the default colour and merges with the colour at the borders.

So it is a difficult nut to crack after all. No suggestions even after 24 hours. Perhaps I have to live with this idiosyncrasy in Word.

    Please tell me
    1. What Web Browser your using?
    2. A link to the page in your screenshot or page that does the same with a one line quote of what your copying.
    3. Does the page show in your browser with a background?
    4. The method your using to copy, eg. manually selecting a paragraph of text or CTRL+A.
    5. When pasted into Word is it pasted as text, a table or a image etc...?

The answers to your questions are as under.

    1. I generally use Chrome but other browsers (Opera and IE9) are no different.
    2. The link is What is a CAM, R5, DVDRip, DVDSCR, XviD…? « TechniX
    3. Yes. You can also see for yourself.
    4. Manually highlighting the text with the mouse and then copying from the Context Menu.
    5. Pasted as text but with a coloured background.

Be that as it may, there must be a very simple way to get rid of the background in the Word applet. Of course I do have a work around by first pasting the text in WordPad and then copying it from WordPad to Word. But the point is why I am unable to edit in Word itself.

Going to have a look later and probably tomorrow but at the moment I can't even get the background to show up in Word when copying from Firefox or IE9. Don't know if this is a setting in Word, the browsers or something else.

Are you using a template in Word or just creating a blank document?

I know in Word when you paste text a little clipboard with CTRL next to it comes up and if you click that you have 3 options, Keep Source Formatting, Merge Formatting or Keep Text Only. Keep Text Only may help if you don't want to keep the formatting. You also should have these options if you Right Click and paste.

I am using a blank document with no template.

Thanks Duzzy for your last paragraph. There were four not three options and pasting with the last two options removes the ugly background.

You have solved my problem. Thank you

As Duzzy mentioned those artifacts DO NOT show up in IE9 or Firefox.
However, the case is true with Chromium-based browsers (may be even Webkit-related).

There are several solutions for Word:
Solution 1. Click a little arrow on Paste button (Office 2010 ribbon) - Paste options: Keep text only.
Solution 2. After pasting text with highlighting, apply Normal Quick Style to it using corresponding button on the ribbon.
Solution 3. After pasting text with hithlighting, go to Page Layout tab - Page Borders - Shading tab - Fill -> No Color; Apply to -> Paragraph.
Solution 4. Use macros from first link below.
Solution 5. Change browser for nonChromium-based. (Sad, but true. No offence!)

    Happy to have helped.
Neutron16 seems to have a couple of solutions that may be better if you find you want to keep the source formatting. I don't have Chrome and can't copy the background with my browsers so I can't test any of them myself.
