How to disconnect a .pst file if i can't open outlook?

Hi, My external HD has crapped itself, and while trying everything to bring it back, I am going down the track of wondering if its a .pst issue and want to disconnect the .pst file from outlook so it doesnt try to connect to the HD, in hope that the HD will come back however I cant open outlook to do so. How can I disconnect the .pst without opening outlook?
Im using outlook 2010, Windows 7 professional.
    thanks
