Thanks for your reply but did you install Libre while having STARTER Office 2010 still installed on the computer.

LIBREOFFICE is great -- and totally free! I installed it and it works VERY well indeed. I think I may have a new app for future customers I will gladly recommend and save them big money buying Office. GO FOR IT -- LibreOffice 4 is here! --- Funny, I was a software configuration manager for big companies and was not a fan of any open-source software due to the "risks". In this case -- I'm becoming a lot more appreciative of all the hard work developers/designers put into the open source tools available out there!

YES, I left Office Starter on the PC. I then associated all doc(x) and xls(x) files to LibreOffice. I left Starter on because it is in a state now where the customer "could" open a file standalone. It just will not work with his windows Live (but LibreOffice does!)

Glad this helped. Funny though, I have no idea why an office product such as Microsoft Word would not work with another Microsoft product such as Windows Live Mail, and, what caused it too. I have NOT found the solution from Microsoft or any other technical forum either. Seems Microsoft shoots themselves in their own feet sometimes.

I got a message from by brother he is having problems with LibreOffice I can't open my office libre documents I think my libreoffice is kaputt
This site talks about some issues people have with LibreOffice and they suggest Softmaker Office. The whole thing is causing me big problems
Another site talks about the problem in which Microsoft changed its docs from .doc to docx and that this created an incompatipility issue. I'm totally confused
    Here is a link http://www.alliancetechnologies.net/...er/doc_vs_docx

He has not uninstalled starter office at all.

Question -- are you running the latest version of LibreOffice? I looked on their website and found that the "Writer" application is supposed to support doc/docx documents (Writer Features » LibreOffice ) You might want to go to the site and look at option extensions, upgrades and so forth. I'm sure they (support) can answer any issues you may have with LibreOffice. BTW - leaving the Office Starter on the PC is perfectly fine. If you change the defaults to open doc/docx, xls/xlsx, etc., with LibreOffice, you can still manually open Office Starter and then open doc/xls files.
