Opening word documents everything is encoded....

well a co worker sent me an email with a document attached she couldn't open. I opened it and it was encoded gibberish, now everything I try to open looks like this ï‰7‹[1]ø~f°/öy¸+ ˜Ä*ó

I am not sure what broke to try and fix it. I can't open any document it seems that one document broke every document I had. Any ideas I am completely stumped on this one.

already tried it. Also tried opening in open office and libreoffice. Tried from other computers. Something happened to the word document. Not sure how to change the documents encoding back to normal.

Anytime someone says "... an eMail that couldn't be opened.... then everything I opened was garbled..." it leads me to believe that the eMail attachment contained a virus. This might not be the issue, but...

The 1st thing I would do is run a full regiment of Maleware programs
start with the AV runtime on your machine

    then

    Bootable Offline scanners:
    On Demand scans

    RogueKiller: Download RogueKiller (Official website)
    RogueKiller tutorial

Download the version for your system (x86 or x64)
Ignore the warning "This program is not commonly doanloaded and could harm your computer"

Open the folder or navigate to the save location in Windows explorer

Right-click RogueKiller and select Run as Administrator
Pre-scan does not load in Windows 7 x64. The "Driver" (DRV) square will be RED

Close all browsers and any other open windows

    Press the SCAN button

A text file, RKreport or RKreport[#], is created on your Desktop

exit RogueKiller without taking any action - do not delete items found at this point, just exit.

Copy the text of the report and post it on this thread
Please use a "code" box by hitting the # icon on the posting menu and pasting your report between the [CODE][/CODE] tags

    Code:

A member will advise you how to proceed after reviewing the output.

    Download AdwCleaner

The default save location is your Downloads folder.

AdwCleaner is a standalone executable, there is nothing to install.

    1. Navigate to your Downloads folder
      .
    2. Right-click on adwcleaner.exe
--> select Run As Administrator to launch the application
      .
    3. Click on Delete button

    4. Confirm each deletion with OK
      .
    5. Your computer will be rebooted automatically.
--> A text file will open after the restart.
--> Please post the content of that logfile in a post on this thread
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner to your Downloads folder (default download location)
This is a standalone utility, there is nothing to install.

Launch the scanner (FSS.exe) from the saved location
    Tick ALL scan options
    Cliick the Scan button

When the scan completes, a report will open - copy and paste the Farber result report in a post on this thread.
If it is too large, place the report into a zip file and attach it to the post.

The report, FSS.txt, is created in the same folder as the executable. If you saved Farbar Service Scanner to Downloads, the results report will also be in Downloads.
