    Formatting symbols

I just dislike editing another authors word document. Unknown formatting is such a problem, furthermore the symbols displayed have little meaning to me. Is there a document showing all formatting symbols and what they mean? One that is bothering me currently, is scattered thru out the document and has the symbol of (see below) but while I am at it, would like to have a reference to show future symbols. I have searched the internet, none show this symbol.

Hi Meebers. With a word document open select "Insert" from the menu bar & then click on "Symbol" which will drop down a list, select more Symbols & you will see that symbol as I have shown in the snip shot.

You will see that that symbol you are querying is for currency.

You can search through the various symbols whenever you need to workout any particular one. I can't supply a list as I think it would be too difficult to try & find all of them at any given time.

I am not trying to insert a symbol, just trying to interpret what the hidden formatting symbol mean. If you use Ctrl Shift 8, you will see the hidden symbols appear in a Word 2010 document indicating a formatting function. Or under the home tab/paragraph the "Pi" symbol will also reveal them. i.e. "."means a space, the "Pi" means a paragraph, etc.

I realise you aren't trying to insert a symbol, but from your first post I gathered that you wanted to know what that symbol was & how you could find out what other symbols actually meant. So all I was trying to do was show you where you could find the symbols in Word & by referring to the list you could workout what they meant.

"In tables you will see one additional character, the universal monetary symbol (¤), which displays variously at various point sizes and magnifications but upon close inspection is seen to be a circle with four lines radiating from the corners. ¤

This is the end-of-cell marker. It is a little like the paragraph mark in that it contains paragraph formatting for the last (or only) paragraph in the cell, but it also holds formatting for the cell. The same mark at the end of each row is the (wait for it) end-of-row marker, which serves a similar purpose with regard to row formatting."

Source: What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?

In my own research and others at work, have been looking at this for several days now. I come to realize now that the original format was done with tables I am having trouble either trying to remove the table or work around it. I have also found that this table "cell" has invisible "lines" around it and on occasion, I can grab and move this line or maybe its called a boundary. The (¤) symbols are everywhere and word allows me to put more in, but is hesitant on allowing their removal. Found one source for its meaning. Tx for your input.
