Windows 7: Outlook 2010 Calendar, only active list view works, calendar view err

Outlook 2010 Calendar, only active list view works, calendar view err

Lenovo T500 Intel Core2 Duo T9600 2.8GHz
Win 7 Professional SP1 64 bit
MS Office Professional 2010 v14.0.7106.5003 32-bit

I've had a persistent problem for several months since I migrated to a new hard drive. Outlook 2010 calendar is working, but only in Active List view. Any attempt to change to Preview or Calendar view produces the error message, "Could not read the calendar." Changing from Active List to List works some of the time, but inconsistently and sometimes it will hunt for the list and offer the same "Could not read the calendar." error message. This is very frustrating as I find it difficult to manage the list view and am accustomed to seeing the calendar week view.

I use an Android phone and use gmail and Google calendar to see mail and appointments on my phone. So, I've got Google Calendar Sync running. Google Calendar Sync appears to be operating normally. I have a nice calendar view on my phone or web-based from my computer. I have tried adding the Google calendar to Outlook but it is a duplicate of the default calendar and I can't set it as the default. Also, MS Office does not permit me to delete the default calendar.

I don't like any of the work arounds. I just want the calendar to work like it should. Research discloses no real hint of anything that works including running scanpst. Scanpst does a great job at fixing the problem by wiping the whole calendar thanks very much MS.

If you have any clue as to the cause and better a solution that works, I'd be very grateful. Please tell me what other information you may need to diagnose the problem.

Edit: I forgot to say, I removed and reinstalled Outlook. I rebuilt my profile from scratch. I recovered email from a archived pst file. I recovered the calendar by exporting my Google calendar and importing the data to Outlook. Basically killed off the old one and replaced it with "new" information. For a time after I did that, everything worked as it should. After a while -- I don't know how long -- the calendar started to act up, giving the error message in Calendar View sometimes until finally it went to only Active List view. This procedure fixed a bigger problem, which was the inability to accept an appointment or meeting sent to me via email.

I also failed to mention, I am a sole practitioner, so this is an individual free standing application. There is no exchange server involved. I use Comcast email (POP3) and also have Gmail coming into Outlook (IMAP) as part of the means for seeing email on the phone and to see any email that is actually sent to the Gmail account.

Try Microsoft's CalCheck tool. "The Calendar Checking Tool for Outlook (CalCheck) is a program that checks the Microsoft Outlook Calendar and items for problems or for potential problems."

You can download it from here:

Thank you for this suggestion. I have the tool, but it refuses to run. Some observations:
  • It identifies the profile name correctly.
  • If I select Options on the Choose Profile dialog box, the tick box for "set as default profile" is empty, but it is the only profile. It is not named "Outlook" the default MS assigned profile name. Should I rename the profile and if so, how do I do that without corrupting anything else?
  • If I tick the box the program launches and returns an error, "Calendar Check Utility has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I have no other choice but to select the "close program" button, and, naturally, there is no notification.
  • The log file indicates only the start time and nothing else.
This prompted me to look at the registry. I have Office 2010 (Office14). I can see in the registry references to Office12\OUTLOOK.EXE but no references to Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE. If I select Help from Outlook, it shows it is V 14.0.7106.5003 (32-bit). So, I am thinking that I am launching the software, but it is somehow orphaned from the registry? There are other references in the registry to Office10 and Office12, which I assumed to be artifacts from older software that has been replaced. Should I back up the registry and then change the all Outlook references from Office12 to Office14? I am not anxious to modify the registry manually, but it would not be my first time. If doing this, any sense of direction on what to do and what not to do would be appreciated.

Any insights you can offer will be appreciated.

Edit: I was not correct about references to Office14 missing. In searching earlier, I had ticked the box for "match whole string only" which did not produce results.

Regarding calcheck.exe, read here: Information about the Calendar Checking Tool for Outlook (CalCheck)
It says, "To use CalCheck, the Outlook calendar must reside on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server. The tool does not work with IMAP, with POP3, or with other non-Exchange email accounts."
This is a stand alone installation, no Exchange server involved, and email is POP3 for the main account and IMAP for the alternate emai.
