Outlook 2010 Contacts Search brings up multiple copies of contact

i have troubles with my outlook 2010 contacts. The main problem is that there is no category view. I have categorized my 1000+ contacts; only one category appears in Current View. When I search for a contact, it brings up three copies of the same contact. Worst, it assigns some an extra category. I recently exported all the contacts into a csv file, deleted them from Outlook, edited the csv file carefully, and imported them back into Outlook. The Outlook file must be corrupt. Should I just start over, delete Outlook, reinstall it, make a new file from scratch, import the csv contacts file? Other ideas?

Duplicate contact issue occurs when you synchronized Outlook with another application. Please check following method to delete duplicate contacts:

    1. Go to Contacts.
    2. Click View, Current View and select Phone List.
    3. Right-click a column header and select Field Chooser from the resulting menu.
    4. In the Field Chooser box, use the dropdown and select All Contact fields.
    5. Select Created.
    6. Drag Created to the Column Headers to add it to the list. Close the Field Chooser box.
    7. Now click on the newly added column header (Created).
    8. Scroll down to the first contact in the list that is to be deleted and select it.
    9. Scroll down to the last contact that is to be deleted. Hold down the Shift key and select this contact. This will highlight all of the contacts that you are going to remove.
    10. Press the Delete key. The duplicate contacts will be removed.

    Duplicates not in contacts list

The duplicates do not appear in the contacts list. They appear when I search the contact list. Suppose I have a contact, "John Smith," the only John Smith in my contacts. When I search for "John Smith" I may get as many as two dozen results. Many of those results do not contain the full contact information, just name and email.

I suppose its one person with the same name and email address. You can hit down key and hit delete them and keep only one you want.

I use Outlook 2013 but I think they are similar. Open Outlook, select File, then Options & in Options select People & see if the Check for Duplicate Names is selected. See attached screen shot.

    Box is checked

Thanks. The box is checked, something I discovered many years ago.

In List view and in Telephone View I see no duplicates. Duplicates appear when I do a search. The main contact list is not changed.
