I bet you were on a less stressed exchange server for work, that is why it was probably faster.
What is that exactly & can I modify my exchange server to be less stressed?

What would make my exchange server stressed if its only one account?

Personally I find Outlook brilliant when connected to an Exchange server.

But for any other kind of server connection I just found it frustrating and irritating. I found this when I migrated my email server from Exchange 2003 to using Exim and Maildir folders. I quickly changed to Thunderbird and now connect by IMAP and haven't looked back since.

If you are indeed picking up your email from an Exchange mailbox over IMAP and you're using Outlook then look into other connection methods that will provide a better experience.
If you have a Front End Exchange Server providing Outlook Web Access try enabling the RPC over HTTP connection method, this way you can connect to Exchange over the internet as if you were sitting on the local network with your Exchange Server.

Some Exchange 2000/2003 Server Performance tips:

If installed on a server with 1GB+ RAM ensure memory is optimized for Exchange: Add /3GB and /USERVA=3030 to boot.ini
Ensure any desktop Anti Virus software has the appropriate exclusions applied: Overview of Exchange Server 2003 and antivirus software
Don't Install Exchange to a Domain Controller
Ensure the following registry value is set to 0: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\SystemPages
Ensure the following registry value is set to 0x00040000: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshold
Use a Front End server for Outlook Web Access and RPC over HTTP, preferably in a DMZ.

Apologies if this is beyond the scope of this thread

Yes it is an IMAP account.

you know, i never paid attention to the messages remaining. i just thought the messages were removed after a certain amount of time. huh, guess i was wrong. the info is here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ou...804201033.aspx, with a simplified excerpt below.

    in outlook:
    >click 'edit'
    >hover mouse over 'purge' from the drop down menu
    >select 'purge options'
    >check the box 'purge items when switching folders while online'

now, whenever you mark a message for deletion in outlook, it will be removed from outlook when: 1) you are online, and 2) you switch from your inbox to another folder
I had to redo win7 & this is an issue again.

I tried the above steps, but the emails still just have a line drawn thru them & not deleted like I want?

Some good ways of dealing with these various issues:

    1. Deleted emails just have a line through them

This will occur with an IMAP account and indicates the mail is still on the server. (If you right-click on it, you can undelete it.) To get rid of a deleted email or group of emails completely, go Edit > Purge > Purge Marked Items in "Inbox" or Edit > Purge > Purge Marked Items in "(name of your account)" or even Edit > Purge > Purge Marked Items in All Accounts.

    2. Slow Send/Receive in Outlook using IMAP

This often means that you have a number of folders configured within your IMAP email account, each containing email items. By default, Outlook will trawl through every one of these folders checking for items to send or receive. Since all your items to be sent are in one place (the Outbox), and all items to be received can generally be piped straight to your Inbox, you can speed the process up by telling Outlook not to go searching everywhere like this. Go Tools > IMAP folders... > Query button. You'll get a list of all the folders on the IMAP server under your account. Untick all of them except the Inbox. Important: also untick the "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders" box at bottom left (otherwise those folders you have just unticked will not show up in your folder list). Then click Apply and OK. Now Outlook will only go hunting in your inbox and will be much faster.

At any rate, these tricks work for me, so I hope they improve matters for you :)

    Awesome thanks.

Dont I want to keep Sent Items or Sent Messages ticked?

I do want it to obviously send my items out when I hit send/receive

    So leave those checked?

Those items shouldn't appear in the list because they are not on the server - they are on your local machine.

To ensure items are sent as soon as possible, go Tools > Options... > Mail Setup tab, then make sure that the "Send immediately when connected" button is ticked.

Ok I did all that, but outlook is still drawing a line through deleted emails instead of removing them.

I hit purge marked items in all accounts, but that didnt work?

And outlook itself just seems to run slow.

Like the messages take a few seconds to show up in the bottom pane when I go to a new message?
