Office XP should work on any OS. Get Office 2007, it works perfectly with 7.

According to windows site (which system is right for you) it says that

Run many Windows XP productivity programs in Windows XP Mode (separate download).

then states that you must use OS Ultimate or Professional OS

Am i miss understanding what it states

    Yes, you are misunderstanding.

CERTAIN programs that run in XP will not run in Windows 7. "XP Mode" is a way to run those programs in Windows 7 and it is available in the Professional and Ultimate editions.

However, it's a different question whether or not Office XP is one of those certain programs. I doubt that it is and I would guess it would work on Windows 7.

But you might want to wait for confirmation on that specific point, just to be safe.

Just an FYI that Outlook 2002 (part of Office XP) is NOT compatible with Windows 7.

I have installed Office XP on Win 7 Pro and can confirm that Word and Excel work. I can also confirm what tgmorris99 said: Outlook does not work, in fact it won't even install.

There's also an annoying that I just discovered. If you encrypted any of your Excel files using Excel's built in encyrption methods (and I assume this applies to Word as well), then you won't be able to open them in Win 7.
