Excel files unable to be opened

Excel documents were able to be accessed three days ago. Went to open one this morning and got the following message - Excel cannot access "file name.xls". The document maybe read-only or encrypted. Then the next message is - "File name.xls" cannot be accessed. File may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding or read-only.

I use a standalone computer and I don't encrypt files. I have emailed them to myself and opened the file on my laptop. I have tried the usual by trying to open from the folder it's in. Nothing works. Can anyone help my please?

Hi SusieQJames, welcome to the Forum.

What version of Excel are you using. If Excel is part of Office, you could try an Office repair. On earlier versions of Excel the file suffix was .xls whereas on later versions it is .xlsx so you could check that as well.

    Many thanks Ranger4

The excel I have is within Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007. When I go in to Programs and select it, I don't get the repair option, only Organize, Uninstall and Change. It is most frustrating!
