OneNote2016 install needs powershell + can't find it, tho it's there

I've successfully installed OneNote 2016 on my laptop with the same OS specs. Now I'm attempting to install it on my PC, with which I've tinkered a lot over the past almost decade. As far as I know I have never done anything with powershell. (I kinda get that it's a user interface to .net of some sorts, but I totally have no clue about any of it; my programming efforts stopped about 1993.) Both, the laptop and the PC, have Office 2007, complete with the old OneNote 2007 (and a bunch of OneNote notebooks I want to convert).

Whenever I run the install to OneNote 2016 -- via their downloaded mini-file that then each time keeps downloading massive temp files, I assume -- there's a pop-up that says it can't find powershell.exe, but when I close that window, it proceeds to install OneNote anyway. Well, it's a stupid install routine, because it goes through the whole process, proclaims OneNote was installed, even pins itself to my taskbar, but whenever I want to start it, it declares "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\ONENOTE.EXE Attempt to access invalid address." and wants to remove the pinned shortcut.

Now, OneNote.exe is present in that 445MB large directory where it claims it looks. I searched my windows directory for the powershell.exe and there are quite a few iterations coming back, but it seems almost all references are to the version 1.0 of powershell.exe. The same is true for the laptop, though. It doesn't seem as if it has any newer version either, which makes this whole thing more mysterious.

I've looked around a bit online and saw that they are up to powershell version 5, but I also know that there's no guarantee that it's exactly the one I need. But I don't really want to install versions 2 to 5. Sadly, none of the system requirements for OneNote 2016 I could find (they are well hidden) say anything about the powershell at all.

Is there anyone out there who can help me? I'd appreciate that very much!!

Hi SamTheEagle, welcome to the Forum.

Firstly check in Control Panel, select Programs & Features & see if One Note is installed anywhere, if it is Uninstall it. Then delete the files on your C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\ONENOTE.EXE. It's possible the version you are trying to install is not suitable for your computer. Then reboot your computer, before continuing.

Then download a fresh copy from this website & install it.

Please, if you know of a link to the complete install file, I'd be delighted, since every time I start the install, I have to do it by starting the tiny installer which then proceeds to download the whole 445MB every time, even if it appears I've stopped the install.

I would think that the One Note install could easily be 445MB. What happens if you allow the install to complete?. One Note is very likely a "Click to Run" installation, which means most of the installation occurs via the internet after you have initiated the installation with that download site I posted in Post #2. A lot of Office 2016 versions are "Click to Run" so It's reasonable to assume One Note 2016 would be the same. Try allowing the install to fully complete without interrupting it.

You should not have to uninstall One Note 2007. Try running a repair on Office 2007. This MS website might help with that.

The only reason I suggested a fresh download was perhaps the one you have may have become corrupted.

The actual download of the Installation One Note "mini file" from the MS website is 4.4MB. I have just downloaded & checked.

Just updating things. After downloading One Note 2016, I attempted to install it. All I got was a small red window telling me it was "Getting things ready". This remained for well over 15 minutes so I aborted the installation. My Windows 7 OS is on a SSD & taking 15 minutes to even start an installation is ridiculous, so that's why I aborted.

So it looks like this will not work on my computer either. I have MS Office Pro 2013 installed & I use One Note 2013 which is part of this, so I am not going to bother with One Note 2016.

I really only tried it to see whether I experienced installation problems like yours, but while certainly different, it still doesn't seem to install properly.

Sorry I really cannot provide any other solutions.
