Convert text to numbers in 2003 MS Word

I need to be able to convert text to numbers in 2003 Word.
Unfortunately I have what appears two types of information on a line such as:

    Walmart 7.40

I just want to convert the 7.40 to a number.

    Any help is appreciated.

If you can find a pattern for the information, such as the number always being the last item in the cell, then you could use "Text to Columns" to separate the number from the text portion. I am assuming that all of the information in question is in one column. If not, then it would be very helpful to rearrange it in that way.

    1. Make sure that the column to the right of the column with the data in it is empty. If necessary, add a blank column to the right of the column with the data in it.

    2. Highlight the column with the data in it. Click Data / Text to Columns.

    3. You now need to decide how to divide up the data. If there is always one space between the word and the number, then you can choose Delimited, then choose Space as your delimiter. If there are always eight characters/spaces to the left of the number, then you can choose Fixed Width. If necessary, do only some of the data at a time, in order to be able to group the data in patterns.

    4. Work your way through the Text to Columns menus, until you are back in the spreadsheet. Your numbers should be in a column by themselves. You can then convert to numeric in one of two ways:

    a. Highlight the numbers, then choose Currency (or Number) as your data type.
    b. Highlight the numbers, then put in the following formula: =value() --> the cell range needs to be in the parentheses.
