How to backup (AND RECOVER) Outlook to files in folders on hard drive?

I want to backup my cloud office email to my local hard drive. Perhaps even archive it all locally. So, I tried saving a few messages to a local file folder. Trouble is when try to click on any of them, outlook attempts to start but just stays on the splash screen "Starting..."

    PS
    no addons enabled
    no messages in eventvwr

Found a work around (not a solution). Downloaded an opensource utility MSGViewer that will at least open the files even if Outlook won't. Outlook probably could, but obviously wants something that it's not telling me about when I click on the .msg file.

What version of Outlook are you using?. How did you copy the emails to a file on your hard drive. I have successfully copied & pasted emails from Outlook to a file on My Documents file on the HDD, using the usual copy & paste method. Then I have deleted the emails from Outlook & they still open in Outlook when double clicked in the saved file in My Documents Library.

If you have One Note installed on the HDD you can save emails to there. To do that Right Click on the email & from the drop down menu select One Note.

It depends on what outlook is using if it's a PST file that's all your emails
