Issues with OneNote crashing

I have multiple computers running OneNote that are having issues. Most are Win 7 Pro computers. Users are either on Office 2010 H&B or Office 2016 H&B. Users documents (my doc, desktop, etc) are redirected folders on the fileserver. It's a virtual server running WIndows Server 2016 Standard

The majority of the OneNote folders are stored on the fileserver in the shared drive. 1 or 2 users have notebooks that are shared from OneDrive.

1. Cache file has stolen all free space. The OneNote cache folder has grown to 40+ GB multiple times in a week. I've had to delete the folder and restart the computer. This happened a few times on 2-3 computers, but seems to have stopped.

2. Takes long to open up. It takes 30 min for OneNote to open up for some users. It's hit of miss if that happens.

3. Unstable. OneNote is constantly freezing and having to restart on its own. When it restarts, I've tried all the options. First time is just to restart. 2nd time is to delete the cache. 3rd time is to reset/delete settings. I'd have to connect all OneNote books again.
This is the main issue. I used to be connected to 5-6 workbooks and leave it open. I deleted all the settings and added all the books back. I've had to do "delete all files and settings" again and added only 1 or 2 books back. It would lockup and have to restart when it's just sitting there. I'd delete the "files and settings" again and not connect any books. I'd leave OneNote open - no workbooks or anything open and it would lock up and have to restart.


I'm personally on Win 7 with Office 2016.


I've tried to "change" office in Add/Remove programs and did the "quick repair". I'm still having this issue.
I'm trying to avoid have to do the full repair or a uninstall / reinstall because a few things are a pain to resetup.


Has anyone else been experiencing anything like this? Have you been able to fix it?

I've never used OneNote so I can't really try to help you but, in regards to freezing, take a look at this (I know it's for Win 10 but shouldn't matter)-

Click the File tab.

Click on Options. And Click on Advanced tab.

Under Display, select the Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box.

within battery options set the selection to: MAXIMUM-BATTERY-LIFE.


#3 Check out the response from "Coolerbob" on page 3 with how he can duplicate the issue. It seems like a mix of including PDF printouts with images is a main source for failure.





I tried #1 during the day (Disable graphics acceleration). I left OneNote open and at some point it locked up and had to restart.

I did #2 last night (Change battery options to Maximum Battery Life). I left OneNote open and it froze/restart without doing anything to it.




We use OneNote like a training manual. Various employees keep their procedures in there. We have about 10 people accessing the book at a time. We've had screen shots, links to other books, tables, etc in there for years.



The overall folder for the main training manual is 600 MB. Is that too much?

I'm looking at the folder properties and "previous versions" tab. There are 5 copies a day, saved at 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.

I don't know if you read through the whole blog but go to page 2 of the link I provided. Starting with a response from SrihariB and moving onto page 3, there are a number of replies which provide different ways that people have resolved this issue.

I don't have Office installed on the fileserver. I'm upgrading a few computers in the near future and will throw an old copy of Office 2010 on there.

I ran the optimization on my computer. It took less than a minute and ran through the different tabs. The folder on the server for this notebook went from 641 MB to 634 MB.
It looks like OneNote is set to optimize the files on its own. Right above the "Optimize Now" button, the option is checked to "Optimize files after OneNote has been inactive for the following number of minutes (20)". I usually leave OneNote open on my computer and there is definetly 20 minutes at night that I don't touch it.
If that's 20 minutes from anyone touching it, that may or may not be the case. If 5 com

puters are left on and OneNote is open, they may randomly be syncing at different times and not giving the folder 20 min of down time.

I've read the full link (thanks again for that!) I forgot to add the 64 bit version of Office from the summary of solutions.


I'm running 32 bit Office on my computer. Reading the install info in that link - it most likely automatically installed 32 bit on all of the computers because of old 32 bit versions that were upgraded. 20 of my 30 computers are on Office 2010 so that's 32 by default. 10 are on Office 2016. 2 were installed on new computers, the rest were upgrades from Office 2010.


I don't have the time to uninstall, reinstall and reconfigure the Outlook settings on all of the computers. It will be very expensive to have my IT company do that and not have a guaranteed fix. Some of the users having the most issues will be having their computers upgraded will just have to wait



Other issue: using hand scribed notes in the files - we don't have anyone that does that.

File size: There doesn't seem like any file size limitations in OneNote from a google search. Limitations really come down to the OS (about 2GB per file) Most topics said 64 bit OneNote will handle larger files better







The quickest/easiest bang for my buck seems to be separating it into smaller workbooks. I have generic company wide info as well as user specific instructions. I'll have to separate the user specific sections to their own notebooks.
I was hoping for an easy "install KBxxxxx" but that's not the case.
