How to remove line numbers Word7
I have a Word7 file which I set up to with lines numbers. As I add info to this file I do get new line numbers with each new line as expected. The problem is I would like to copy some or all of the information in this file to another one but without line numbers. When I tried a simple select all and copy it copies all the line numbers to the new file too. I tried to copy just a few lines and I still get the line numbers when I paste into a new file. I tried to remove the line numbers in the original file but when I go to Page Layout and Line Numbers to remove the line numbers it already has None checked even though I am seeing and using line numbers already. So how can I remove all the line numbers or is there a way to copy just the data without getting the line numbers? Thx.

[2] Does the same thing happen if you open a standard blank document? |

I do not have a template for this file. I just started with a blank and set up the standard stuff, margins, line spacing etc and to use line numbers. I do have a couple different files which are set up for line numbers and I checked another one and found that I also can not remove the line numbers in it.
As far as a blank document I just set up a new test file with a few lines using line numbers. When I look at the line number setting on it I see continuous is set and I am able to turn off the line numbers. |

You probably need to reset the Normal Template in Word & to do that follow these websites.
This MS website explains how to reset the Word Normal Template. When you open the website click on Other Version drop down for Word 2007. Change the Normal template (Normal.dotm ) - Word This website might also help you with setting the Normal Template. News, Tips, and Advice for Technology Professionals - TechRepublic Once you get the Normal Template set all documents created from then on should use the Normal Template. When you have created a new document you would normally save it to a folder in your Documents Library. This does not change the Normal Template in Word. |

I followed the directions in the article you suggested however the changes I make do not seem to take effect. For example I changed the margins to normal but the first line is right at the top of the page, I do see Arial 10pt which I picked though so somethings worked. Also when I went back to see if the template to apply to all new documents was set I found it was not set.
Even if I do get a new template set up how does that allow me to remove the line numbers in the current document which is my current problem? thx |

When you have set the Normal Template, you will have to reset all margins & page size etc., & then save it as the Normal Template.
Once you have the Normal Template working properly you should be able to copy your existing numbered documents & then paste them into the new Normal Template, which should allow you to remove the numbers & make other changes if needed. Then save it to as a new document, which will leave the Normal Template in the original set up that you have made. The directions in those websites are the correct ones to use for the reset, so you made need to run through themmagain. |

I have been testing several things. I reset the template several times as you suggested but that still did not help with the three files I have set up that use line numbers. When I open those they all show none even though the line numbers are showing and work properly. When I try changing it to continuous I get an addition set of line numbers in the file. So I tried making a file on another Win7 system. Everything worked as expected on the second system. And when I moved this test file to the first system it also works as it should. I am able to remove the line numbers and set margins ect. I then created a new file on my original system and I am able to add and remove line numbers in the file.
So it appears the problem is just with these original files plus I still can not get the top margin to be set no mater what I have set it to. I did try moving one of the problem files to the second system but that did not solve the problem. If anyone has any other suggestions I would really appreciate it as these files are way too large to copy each line individually without the line number to a new file. thx again. |

Thanks everyone. I figured out a workaround to get rid of the line numbers converting the docx file to a doc file then opening it in Wordperfect there were no line number displayed. Then it was a simple matter of selecting the text and copying it back to a Word7 file. Sorry I did not think of something like this first. Fast and Easy
