What’s happening on this Office 2010 Home & Student?

This thread is for the Office gurus.

    I'm trying to make Office 2010 64 2010 Home & Student work on a Win 7 pro 64 laptop.
It was on a friend’s laptop that died. He gave me the license and a Proofing tools package he bought as he is using a new Office version.
These are the steps I did:
    - Ran setup.exe
    - Entered the key
    - Selected the options (Word, Excel. PPoint) and deselect other features (one note, languages etc)
The Office has installed, it’s activated but has the following problems:

    - All the shortcuts created on Start – Microsoft Office doesn’t work. It gives me an error that the shortcut can’t work. So I went to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 and created a shortcut for winword.exe, Excel.exe and Powerpnt.exe and they work. Exeption is OIS.exe (Picture Manager) that doesn’t (error: Microsoft Office has stopped Working).

    - If I double click a Word, Excel or Powerpoint document, they don’t launch Word, Excel or Powerpoint, it runs into the same process than a shortcut.

    - I have manually set the installation, choosing what to install. But I run setup – change, and most all items that I had choose d to install on my computer now shows as “Run on fist use”

    - The proofing tools shows as not installed, even with English and Portuguese installed with the a Proofing tools package.

    - I ran WU and it had installed more than 60 updates to Office and more than 70 to the Proofing tools.

I have used same Office 2010 installation package on many computers (different keys) and they are working fine.

Can someone explain me what’s going on?

    Hello Megahertz07,

well, I do not know answer myself. The quote here has a similar problem, and same language pack:

    Hi,

The problem might you set English as defult, please set Language to Portuguese(Brazil) as default.

    For example:

Start Word -> File -> Options -> Languange -> Under Choose Editing Languages -> Highlight Portuguese(Brazil) -> click Set as Default button.

And click Review tab -> Language group -> Language Preference -> Highlight Portuguese(Brazil) -> click Set as Default button.

    Best regards.

but you have set the Default language to Portuguese (Brazil). So different question. There are two places to set default language, so have you set this default language in
Start Word -> File -> Options -> Languange

    as well as in

Review tab -> Language group -> Language Preference

    ?

    Iko22,
The Office pack does not have Portuguese proofing tool. It was an option from Proofing tools package. that I installed latter.
All other problems (like shortcuts not working) began just after the Office 2010 installation.

Yes, I believe your photo shows Portuguese language pack installed, so I suggested check Office that this pack is set as default. There are two places to set the default. Perhaps you set the one, and not the other?

As you have other problems, then Repair the Office installation, via Programs/Features.

Iko22, Repair was the first thing I tried.
It's something I never seen in 30 years installing Office.

Wild question: Is the laptop using 3rd party security programs? Reason for asking: long ago, I had a very similar problem, every time I used only MSE or only WD -- everything was fine. As soon as I used any 3rd party stuff like Avast, Avira, whatever, did not matter, no more MS Office, almost exactly like you describe. Since I could not prove to MS the problem - I removed office, went with Libre and Open Office -- no problem ever since.

    Hi Mega,

The Mgadiag is irrelevant, MS in their wisdom depracted this check years ago.

This prompted me to check my Word installation - what the heck?! I know I installed with English dictionary/language pack but it is now shown as NOT INSTALLED. Very strange.

I gave up. It's not the fist time I can't install a software. I think is one of those hundreds updates.

Event Viewer was reporting a lot of msiexe and other errors so I decided to start over and do a clean Win 7 install and install Office 2010 before the updates.
