Stuck in Office 2007 Land

I'm retired and don't have the need for Office 365 nor the subscription fee that goes along with it. I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit, and have Office 2007, updated/ upgraded from the 2003 version. The problem that I seem to have is working with PDF files that I want to modify and resend. Maybe I just don't understand how Office 2007 is supposed to handle these files because I don't see icons that are supposed to do that for me. Is there a later version of Office that I should be getting? Will the free Office alternatives work better? I'm not an Office expert by any means, so, my problems are probably my lack of understanding what I'm trying to do. Thanks.

@kodakjack, there is an add-in from Microsoft that allows Word 2007 to save as a PDF, but it doesn't add the ability to open PDFs. You may have the add-in already, if so then it will appear on the Office Button under Save As > PDF or XPS. If not, you'll have to download it. MS have now removed the download from their servers, but you can still find it in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

https://web.archive.org/web/20120428...ails.aspx?id=7
(nb: after you click the download button you'll need to click on 'If your download does not start after 30 seconds, click here: Start download' to complete the download).

Note that even with this add-in you cannot open a PDF in Office 2007. The intention is that you create and edit as a Word document, then export as a PDF when done.

LibreOffice has the same function in that you can export an office document as a PDF. However it also allows you to open a PDF in LibreOffice Draw (the equivalent of Powerpoint) edit it then 'Export as PDF' (not 'save as', LibreOffice, like MS Office 2007, only allows you to save as an office document).

The first version of Word that can convert a PDF into a Word document so that you can edit it was Word 2013.

Thanks. I guess it doesn't solve all of my problems, but it helps.

The OP wants to be able to edit then save PDFs, saying they are: "... working with PDF files that I want to modify and resend".
