Office H&S Outlook files location?

I'm trying to import my Outlook e-mails and addresses into Outlook 2007 Home & Student on Windows 7..... from a file that was part of a back-up done on another (now dead) computer running XP Home. I think I have found that Outlook files on a DVD that was burned for me from that backup but Outlook won't import from it. I'm thinking I could drag the file from the DVD to wherever it is in Windows 7 (on the new computer) but I can't find the location. Is this a .pst file or something else? Where would it be in Windows 7 Home? Thanks.

Unless Outlook 2007 was installed separately from Office Home and Student 2007, you don't have Home and Student 2007. Outlook is in Standard and higher. HS only has Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote.

But that aside, Outlook 2007 stores your .PST file [has all your emails, contacts, etc] within this directory in Windows 7:

[DRIVE]:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

I am trying to restore Office Outlook e-mails, addresses and contacts to my new computer (running Windows 7) from a DVD burned from the backup files from my old computer which ran XP Home. Outlook will not import what I think are the correct files directly, but I thought I could drag and drop the files into wherever they should be...... if only I knew where that was. On my old computer this was a .pst file but I'm not finding anything like that on the new Outlook installation in 7. Where should it be? OR hopw else can I get the old Outlook and Archive files into the new installation.

[I can still get them from the old hard drive, but it would be a lot easier this way, if I can find where to put them. One thing................... what I think are the correct files on the DVD are showing as 'read only' when I try to open them directly on the disk. Not sure what that means.

I believe you have posted a question similar to this one already but let me say this:

If you are importing your emails and contacts, they have to be in .PST format for Outlook to understand them properly. I suggest you use the FILE > IMPORT setting to get your emails into outlook properly. If you just replace the PST file, you might have different account settings that aren't correct anymore or something might be different.

Typically, if you only have one mail profile, it's just OUTLOOK.PST [non-caps].

And about your DVD read-only issue, that is common. When you copy a file from a DVD, the file system attributes stick with it. Being that your DVD is read-only, the file becomes read-only. So right-click your file and choose PROPERTIES. Uncheck READ-ONLY and choose apply.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge. You are correct, of course, that Outlook 2003 is not in Office H&S.

I cannot find a file called App Data in my user path in W7, though there is one called Contacts.

I moved the Outlook and Outlook Archive files to a folder on my desktop. They do not show in the import window using Outlook Import when I click on the folder they are in (several other files in that folder don't show either, so I assume this is a file type thing). I tried to import from the folder level and the first time it said it had imported one address but I can't tell for sure because I had several addresses in the W7 already and it may have been a duplicate. Now, when I try to import the same way, I get a window saying 'the mail folder could not be opened'.' Also.... not sure if it's important, but there are only two sources available in the import window - Eudora and Outlook Express.....so I choose OE. There is no option for Outlook.

Again, I apologize for the lack of clarity and knowledge. I'm kindof frustrated with this whole thing but have managed to get almost all my data off the DVD except e-mail stuff.

Thanks. I wound up calling my cousin, who is a tech, and he walked me through the same routine. I hadn't seen that that there was an option to import .pst files in the 'files from another program or file' type listing. Not sure why I missed it, but it may have been that I tried it earlier (before I had unlocked the .pst files from read only status)....... and then forgotten about that. Anyway............. it worked perfectly. I am now a happy camper again.
