    Click on Start button, in Search box type regedit and click on the regedit icon in the search results. Navigate to the following key.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Data

    (That number might be 12.0 or 11.0 or 10.0 depending on which version of Office you have installed). Then do the following.

    1. Click Data, then click Export on the File menu.
    2. Name the file Windata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
    3. Click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes.
    4. Exit Registry Editor.
    5. Now test whether the crash happens again.

    @Bill2:
    Thank you! This worked wonderfully.

    @Everyone else:
    DONT REFORMAT / REPAIR INSTALL / MODIFY OR ERASE YOUR OS IN ANY WAY!!

    THIS SOLUTION WORKS!

    I have Windows XP Ultimate 64 bit OS. I was getting worried this was too specific of a solution to work for me. Without finding your post I would have had no idea it was Microsoft Word giving me the problem (it was just open in the background when this started happening while I was browsing the internet)!

    I realized it was the save as dialog when Firefox crashed on startup and Internet Explorer crashed when I tried to download Firefox at the save / open dialog. I just registered to say thank you and let anyone else having trouble with Save / Save As / File Open Dialog crashes on their computer who has Microsoft Word know to DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS SOLUTION!

    Try it. If the problem isn't fixed, you can just double-click the .reg file you created in the steps above and your registry will be as it was before you deleted stuff. Your compy wont crash and burn. I promise.

    I would have wasted so much time repairing or (re)installing my OS if I had not done this. D: So thank you again!
