How to get Office 2010 at a rock-bottom price

If you’re considering an Office 2010 upgrade, be sure you learn the lesson of Windows 7. Microsoft offers its best prices to early adopters. Those who wait pay more.

Here’s a recap of what you could have taken advantage of last summer, after Windows 7 was released to manufacturing but before it was available for retail sales. Microsoft offered “screaming deals” on upgrades (”a special, time-limited offer”)—a mere $50 for Windows 7 Home Premium and $100 for Windows 7 Professional. There was also a three-license Family Pack of Home Premium for $149 that sold out about six weeks after the retail launch date, and a special $30 upgrade offer for college students ended around the beginning of the year.

None of those deals have been repeated. Those who waited paid more. The current prices for retail upgrade versions of Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional at Newegg.com are $110 and $176, respectively.

So what’s the best price you can get now on Office 2010? The biggest wrinkle, as I noted in my Prices, packaging, dates, and other details post, is that Microsoft has dropped upgrade prices completely. One price fits all in the Office 2010 era. So the challenge now is to seek out the best current price and then decide whether you’ll be able to do better.

    Good post.
    However...
You can only purchase 25 copies at a time for this deal.
I just purchased 75 copies total of Office Standard 2007 upgrade for my company needs.
And we get free Office 2010...which I hear from the grapevine will release May 12.

Also...keep in mind. Once 2010 is public, Microsoft will not prevent you from purchasing Office 2007 from their suppliers....but they will stop supplying them shortly thereafter.

Looking at Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition (3 User Licence)

What are the constraints on those three users?
    -- must they be related?
    -- same postal address?
    -- same IP address?
    -- or ... ?

And does the "Free Office 2010 download" give you 3 licences too?

    here some answers

I purchased a license for the Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition. The license terms say I may install the software on three devices in my household for use by people who reside there. My step-children live half their time at my house and half their time at another house. May I install one of those copies on a computer at the other house for use by my children?

No, the installations must all be in the same household. If your step-children reside in your household and you install the software on up to three portable devices within your household, the children can take the portable devices with them when they move between your household and the other household.

I have a vacation home that is solely for my family’s use (other than occasional guests). Can I install one of my three copies on a computer at our vacation home?
Yes, a vacation home that is solely used (other than occasional guests) by those that reside in the primary household will be considered an extension of the primary household.
