Good software to cut long mp3 files?

Those who know about music editing, could you give me a recommendation please?

I've recorded a few webradio concerts and opera transmissions. Now I've got one very large file for each. For my mp3 player I'd like to cut them into smaller pieces, cutting out the moderator's comments between acts and the applause from the audience.

I'm not very experienced in music editing. I need a software where I can set several cuts with the possibility of replaying the selected part and making corrections (often there is only a fraction of a second between the final chord and the applause).

I've looked at some freeware, but those programs delete the part before the cut whereas I want to keep it and cut out only little pieces in between.

It doesn't have to be freeware but it shouldn't be too expensive either.

I like Audacity for editing digital recordings.

Sony SoundForge Audio Studio is quite good for audio editing.

If you are not experience in audio editing and you mostly want to split mp3s, then you can use MP3DirectCut: mp3DirectCut - editor to cut, fade, split and record compressed mpeg audio
