I am using iTunes 8.2 and have been since Public Beta (1/1/2009) without a crash or problem. You can download older versions of iTunes by doing a google/bing search for old iTunes. iTunes 8.2 has been running for a year now without any problems. I do not care for the latest verison of iTunes, and it is not that they are buggy just to big.

If you have a copy of 7zip you can open the iTunes installer and remove/use only those applications you want to install; will look to see if I still have the tutorial for doing just that.

Here is a copy of the applications in the iTunes installer:

AppleAApplicationSupport
AppleMobileDeviceSupport64 (for 64 bit OSs)
AppleSoftwareUpdate
Bonjour64 (for 64 bit OSs)
iTunes64 (for 64 bit OSs)
QuickTime
SetupAdmin

You can pick and choose what you want to install without including all the applications listed.

Here is a link on how to install iTunes without all the crap.

that would be good to know, I use GTKpod to sync my iPod but my kids all use iTunes on their computers, which causes all sorts of problems

Already figured it out.. very good to know that can be done
thx

edit: reinstalled on my kids' computers using just the needed packages... BIG difference in performance vs running itunes with the bloat simply disabled

No offense, but iTunes would be the last one I'd mention

Check out CDex small, fast flexible reliable and of course free check out the features HERE
If it's about replacing WMP as well I would have to suggest Media Monkey

Actually, I tried only installing itunes 10, apple application support and quicktime, using the method lee suggested and it works nearly as well as using gtkpod to sync an ipod (64 minutes to add 120 GB of music to a 160GB ipod vs 56 min to do the same set of songs in gtkpod in linux, using the same computer connected to the same network drive) itunes 10 installed with the full set of bloat takes more than 2 hours to complete the same task.. probably because itunes installed minus the unnecessary packages doesn't get to phone home to check every song you're trying to put on your ipod..
As far as the OPs issue, I'm at a loss regarding suggestions for a good cd ripping app that isn't trialware or some neutered free version of a 29.99 app you can get for free in linux

You're talking about CDex, right? of course the lame is part of the deal
Download for Windows NT series (7, Vista, 2003, XP, 2000, NT) and Windows 9x series (ME, 98, 95)

Quote:
  • Lame MP3 encoder
  • Internal MP2 encoder
  • APE lossles audio format
  • Ogg Vorbis encoder
  • The Windows MP3 encoder (Fraunhofer MP3 encoder)
  • NTT VQF encoder
  • FAAC encoder
  • Windows WMA8 encoder
If you were talking about MM...there are no problems with W7 I'm aware of

@madtownidiot: MediaMonkey is probably the closest you could get to Amarok in the Windows world

The only problem with Media Monkey is if you don't buy the full version the burn and rip are crippled.
