How to encode h246

What I have: 6 Seconds of film, still in single images.

What I want to have in the end: A 6 seconds movie of whatever file-format, encoded with h264.

Now, i would use VirtualDub for putting together the single images and on the same time compress them. But VirtualDub has only .avi as an output, and I read that H264 is not good for .avis. In addition, I havent got "h264" as an option in VirtualDub for Compression, even after I installed the ffdshow-pack.

How can i achieve my goal?

I read that the H264-codec is opensource. I guess I can achieve my goal with freeware?

No biggie

(You actually CAN use AVI for h.264 but mostly used is mkv or mp4)
So just make your AVI with VirtualDub and then run it through this one:
H.264 Encoder - freeware encode video to H.264 format
But you could as well run it through any other Encoder that supports h.264
Have you ever tried VirtualDubMod ??Not 100%sure but I believe that one can do h.264 if you have the right codec

i just got virtualdub with h264 working. i had the ffdshow-virtualdub-plugin installed in the wrong directory.

So there's nothing wrong with avi-h264?

and aside from all this, what audio-codec can you recommend in general?

Since AVI is just a container it's OK to use h.264 for the video track
The Audio track usually would be AAC (Advanced AudioCodec)
But AC3 or even MP3 would be OK it mostly depends on what your Encoder can combine

Depending what audio type you want to use.

Different containers have better support.

AVI -- MP4 -- MKV

In that order, with MKV supporting the most options the best.

MP4 is good for H264/AAC (will need 3rd party splitters if you use AC3 though)
MKV is good for H264/AAC/AC3/DTS and more

Best H264 encoder I have found is MeGUI. It supports all of the above and then some. Like MT2S etc.

I would at least use a MP4 container TBH. Worst case scenario, demux the AVI with TSmuxer or YAMB and remux with MP4 box.
