ugh, now only one of my mkv files has no audio! and i played the entire movie just minutes before!

so i removed all my codecs to try other ones, but WMP and MCE still play them, even with no codecs installed

i was trying to get subtitles to work, since i was watching kill bill, but now it doesnt even have an audio track, weird!

ok, installed the win7codecs, and all is right... kill bill now has audio and subtitles.. in WMP

no audio in windows media center, no subtitles... for only some mkv's

also, how can i make the subtitles only display when a language other than english isnt being spoken?

All your requirements will be satisfied with CCCP. I am sure other people can get other things to work right but seriously who cares...in software there is always a right tool for the right job and looking at all your suffering looks like you are just one download away from getting everything sorted out. Ditch WMP...seriously.

Alternative? The KMPlayer. No need of codecs and you can disable subtitles with a right click on the video.

    Btw, VLC sux.

I don't understand why so many people hate VLC. I've been using it for years and have never ran into any problems or videos it couldn't play. And I download videos/anime all the time.

That said, Win7codecs that Shark007 had mentioned looks very appealing. It installs (and even removes older codecs) a ton of codecs that work flawlessly in WMP? I must give this a try. If it works as well as it claims, I will totally ditch VLC for this.

You installed Ac3filter only on the fresh windows installation and you can playback mkv?
