    "My Pictures"

I have changed from XP to W7.

In XP I was able to move my photos around in their respective files. I can no longer do this in W7.

I download my photos from my digital camera to Picasa 3. At the same time they are added to my Pictures Library in W7.

I can move them about in Picasa 3 but not in my Picture library.

If there is any advice out there to enable this to happen, I would be grateful to know about it!

(There are many anomalies in W7 that are not pleasing. Many programmes are not compatible with W7 that I had in XP. (Most especially amongst these is the fact that my Sony Ericsson mobile which has blue tooth, infrared and a synch station with which I could backup data and download photos, no longer functions because my W7 has no bluetooth, infrared and the synch station is not compatible. S.E. state that there is no patch to enable it to function with W7. 300 + UK pounds worth of phone that is only able to be used to phone and text with - big deal! It is a shame that XP stopped updating, or I would revert.)

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Colin

In Win 7, auto-arrange is turned on in all folders, except the Desktop. There is no option to change the setting.

There is a tutorial where you can disable it in all folders, but not in Libraries.

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable

If you have Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, you can run XP Mode and access your phone thru that. That's how I access mine.

    Dnorris,
    Many thanks for your reply.

I would expect nothing less from M/S - bring out a new version and cut down on accessibility! I am looking into Linux, to see what I have got and how it can be operated with Linux. I am not a technician and the things that I mainly do with my pc may be easier to do with Linux. However, the checking will take a while to ensure that it is the right choice. It is not because it appears to be free, but I am fed up with not being able to do things with W7 that I did with XP.
I have W7 Home Premium - I reckon I'm unlucky! I did try 'taking ownership', 'run as administrator' and 'troubleshoot compatibility', I really hate machines that are 'planned-in' to take the initiative.

So, with the unsolveable problem remaining unsolved, I will close this thread with thanks for your input.

    Regards

    Colin

That's a shame because if you percevered just a little with Windows 7 you would find it does all that the previous Windows OS's have done and a lot more. When you say you download your photos to Picasa what exactly do you do and where do your photos finish up. You can only download them to a folder and that can be any one of your choosing. If you download them to the Picasa program folder you will get problems !

Pictures within folders are typically in ascending order. You can arrange them in any order you wish by prefixing the name of the photo with a sequential prefix. Maybe not what you'd prefer but workable nonetheless.

Why doesn't your Win 7 have Bluetooth? It's easy enough to add an inexpensive USB Bluetooth dongle to any computer. I have Bluetooth on almost all of my Win 7 computers and it works great.

Then your only choice is Windows XP. Because Linux is much much further away to being like Windows XP then Windows 7. Linux is a completely different world. So either way you are not going to get Windows XP unless you use Windows XP. And, no it won't be easier on Linux. Even with Ubuntu making strives in user accessibly it is still an OS for an advanced and technical user.

The photos actually go to My Pictures but I download them into Picasa. Picasa is just a photo programme that takes the photos from the pc and puts them into it's programme, they basically stay in their pc location. Even if you delete Picasa, the photos are not deleted. Their file location is users/ user/my pictures/ then the named file. I do not have a problem because they are downloaded by Picasa,
as such. However, as Dnorris mentioned in his answer, MS have made the movement of photos in the file impossible. Therefore if I wish to add photos to the file, they go where MS dictate not to the location where I wish them to be - I find this a trifle aggrivating.(eg: If I have pictures of houses and pictures of trees in a file, if I download a picture of a tree and it downloads in amongst the houses, there is no way that I can put it amongst the trees because it will only go in the location that a new photo is designated to go by MS in the programme).
I am sure that you are correct when you state that W7 is wonderful. For some reason, it is not too good for me! I do like some of the improvements in the Office 2007, though!
I have tried to persevere for nearly a year - some things work!

    logicearth,
Thank you. I take on board your remarks. I shall not revert to XP. The reason I went for W7 was because MS stopped updating XP and I prefer to be able to update with whatever improvements may be offered to improve the working. I 'threw in' Linux as some people 'rave' about it, I know absolutely nothing of it!
I don't think I will have too much trouble with things as they are, it is as I said, a 'trifle annoying' not to be able to locate them in my preferred position in the file. The fact that they are in the file will have to suffice!

    Thanks again.

    strollin,
    Thanks for your remarks.
As I understand you, I would have to, for example, put a number under the photo - probably alongside the number from the camera - to enable that photo to go to a preferred location in the file? (presumeably, if a successive photo requires insertion it woulñd have to have n 'a' or 'b' etc, alongside it?)
I have no idea why my W7 does not have bluetooth or infra red. It never came with it, or if it did, I can not find it anywhere. Where would I search for a ?dongle? - whatever that is - and would I be advised to get one for infra red also?
(Pardon my ignorance - I've only had a computer for 5 years, and being past my sell-by date, I find this a pretty steep learning curve!

    Regards

    Colin.

I think you should try Linux - and maybe in 2 years from now when you managed to operate it you can give us a report on how you like it. I would be amazed if you did not find 2000 things wrong in Linux because it is nothing like Windows.
