Unable to play dvd's via HDMI

I can't play dvd's when I connect my laptop (HP dv7 series, Win7 Pro x64) to a TV (a Toshiba I think) via HDMI. If I disconnect the HDMI-cable I can play dvd's in both WMP and VLC as normal. When I connect the HDMI-cable I can see my desktop on the TV but I can't play dvd's in neither WMP nor VLC. Both WMP and VLC acts as if the dvd's are a corrupt or unsupported file, except for the lack of a warning.

I can't really figure this out so pls help.

I'm assuming you don't get any error messages or anything?

No error messages of any kind. VlC starts up but won't play anything, and WMP plays for about 1 second then return to it's start screen. I've tried to forward a bit into the movie (in WMP) and then connect the HDMI-cable. WMP played for about 1 sec.

Does the TV show all other aspects of your PC. Can you run and see other programs working normally? When the TV is showing the PC details is the PC monitor working too?

When connected then the TV is a mirror image of my laptops monitor. I haven't tried to run any other programs while connected to the TV.
