Just realised, it's all to do with the version of McAfee. My wife and I have exactly the same HP laptops, both Windows 7 SP1 and both with McAfee. Her laptop doesn't have this problem but mine does.
Her laptop has McAfee version 10.5.237 whereas mine is version 11.0.555.
I'll try to unintall my McAfee and install the 10.5.237 version - hope i didn't throw out the old McAfee disc.

Found a solution and fixed my Laptop. So to prevent any more 'disappearances', need to change a registry key. The steps are explained by McAfee Support in the following link:

First open McAfee and disable access protection in:
Navigation/General settings and Alerts/Access Protection. Un-tick
'Use Access Protection'
1) Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and browse to this
'folder'
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\SystemCore\VSCore\On Access
Scanner\McShield\Configuration\Default]
2) Locate the entry ExcludedItem_16 in the list
3) double-click on ExcludedItem_16
4) change the value 3|3|*.TMP to 3|3|*.LOG
5) Close the Registry Editor, save your work and reboot the
computer.
Remember to go back and Re-enable 'Access Protection'

If in step 4, the value is already 3|3|*.LOG, then uninstall/reinstall McAfee. The registry value will become 3|3|*.TMP, and then you can follow the above steps.

I just got my new Toshiba a week ago and have got the same problem with the rotation of pics - they just went hidden....ok I found out how to unhide them and now I will have to work out how to follow your advise. Thanks a million for that! At least there is a solution to this problem - since an IT friend of mine wasn't able to help either - he suggested to join this forum ... good lad!

i have tried this fix and found some of the photos i rotated but the ones that i rotated a while ago they haven't re-appeared does anyine have any ideas where they may be?
I had the same problem with disappearing pics in windows photo viewer after altering them. Found them using Nepalpro's method, and determined it was McAfee real time scanning causing the issue following alexnlp's advice.
Next step, call McAfee. Thanks for the great advise.

I have had this issue return on a customers machine after a month so it doesnt look asthough Mcaffee are doing a quick fix!
Same thing happened to me just now. Go to search and write hidden files, click on show hidden files and folders. Check show hidden files, folders etc. Go back to your folder where the file was before it deleted and the hidden files should be there. Right click on the files and go into properties, where you can uncheck that they are hidden files.
I too "lost" a special picture that I rotated and can't find!! I chose the "display hidden files" option, hit "Apply" then "OK", and the command doesn't "stick". I go through the files again to find IMG 423 and its not visible. I go back to the box to select hidden files to be displayed, and its set to not display them. Grr...why doesn't this command stick?
I tried uninstalling McAfee, it won't uninstall.
