I use Media Player Classic for movies and Foobar for music. Always have done :)
Hi there
I use VLC for DVD / Video (works on both Linux and Windows) and I have a Squeezebox Duet (and Internet radio) for playing Music -- It has good Optical Output for plugging into a high quality amp and will among others play FLAC directly - no transcoding needed.
For Digital Terrestial TV (DVB-T) with a TV card the Windows Media centre is fine
The good thing about Squeezebox is that you don't even need your computer on to play music - although to access your Music folders you need the computer to be on.
People want to be able to access music wherever its stored so tying yourself into a particular application isn't alwways a good idea.
BTW Squeezebox works on Linux too.

Used and still use VLC in XP and now in Windows 7, I like that I have many video playback options also has some cool skins :)
For me problem with VLC is after all this time it still doesn't have a "resume" feature. I frequently don't watch a movie all the way through in one setting. It's a hassle having to remember where you left off when viewing it multiple times.
The VLC I have cannot play blu ray direct source material. Even backup blu ray files don't play smoothly.
VLC is fine for most other video.
VLC, no doubt. the rest cannot even compare, i think.
winamp for audio.
splash player pro for video.
if you havent ever used it, try the trial you wont be disappointed :)
