Windows 7: VHS to DVD help? (merging .mpgs and compressing 4 to a disk)

that didn't work. AVC converted the movs to mpg with perfect sound and video, but only a 40 second file.

tried dvdstyler on the Mac, which hung and caused a kernel panic (BSOD)

I'm going to try re-recording the videos in .mp4 and see if that works.

I wished I had a copule supercomputers (one windows, one Mac). that way I can test things out faster without waiting hours for the computer to process stuff.

WTFH!

everything I've tried with these .mov files fail. can reencode them, can't play in windows, and can't successfully use in dvdstyler in either os.
I'm currently trying with mpeg4 as the video format (Was JPEG before).*if that doesn't work, i'll use the uncompressed YUV option, which *should* work with YUV Converter to convert to .mpg.

ugh. If Apple didn't force you to shell out $20 for MPEG2 compatibility in quicktime this wouldn't be so damn hard.

I THINK I got it figured out now... had to switch to ffmpegX instead of AVC. a 30 second check was identical to the original, so I'm going to set the mac to convert the .movs to .mpg overnight. Hopefully I'll get .mpgs that DVDStyler accepts without complaint.

Well I really think you are allowing a relatively simple task to become overly complex. I'm still convinced you have a problem with the captured clips in particular the capturing device.. Must you really swop back and forth between a Mac and a PC? This must cause certain problems, surely if only a loss of quality every time you swop!

to be honest I don't really know anymore. All I know is that I think it's worth it.

The software for te Windows creates incredibly shitty recordings with a really bad audio track. but those can be dropped into DVDstyler no problem
The mac software makes captures identical to the vhs tapes with no more loss in quality. but it uses .mov, which dvdstyler fails on and most conversion software can't handle. except for ffmpegX, aparrently.

I've been able to sucessfully use ffmpegX to convert one movie to MPG, and dvdstyler managed to encode that one fine. I'm currently trying to convert the other movies, which is taking a while.

lloking agian, the reason why the windows captures are so shitty is podssibly because of the audio in and the software's insistence of splitting the video into 4gb files.
when it splits the video it makes the playback rather jerky at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half. that may be solved by buying the latest version of the software, but that's expensive.
and on the windows i wasu using the line-ins built into the capture device. on Mac those don't work, so I used a RCA to headphoine jack adaptor to use the mac's line in. the line in ports on the pc don't work. I'd live to fix that, but it's too uch effort at the monent.

i"m now trying to convert to .mp4 h264 and let dvdstyler deal with it directly. a sample vid shows that it might work, but most likely no.

I can only say that with a genuine device from EzCap you can capture to mpeg2 and keep with that whatever else you want to do. One of the problems you will likely encounter with the device you have is that gradually as the video goes on the audio will go out of sync. There's nothing you can do about that!
Just take a look here:
EzCAP 116 USA order page. EzCAP-USA
That's a small price to pay for the genuine article and no hassle!
