Yes, to get the thumbnails back, you uninstall the problematic codecs and install ones that work without issue.

Also, check to make sure you have the option to display icons instead of thumbnails UNchecked (Option One):

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

I currently use a codec pack but can't recommend it because of lack of support for similar recurring issues.

Well again, in order to show an icon, explorer needs to open them up and render the first frame of video. In order to do that you need the right codecs installed for each video type (There are like 50 possible codecs for ".avi" alone!). But if you have an old or buggy codec pack installed, then that's when explorer crashes when looking at movie folders.

There are a few types that Windows can do natively, but many AVIs and MKVs and such will require codec installs. I've used Sharky's codec pack with decent results... no crashing so far anyway.

If there was no freezing before installation of the codecs and you're only getting it when explorer is trying to display or thumbnail the files that the codecs are used for, then odds become rather likely that is the problem.

My suggestion is to uninstall the codecs, as stated earlier, and install a better codec package that won't cause corruptions.
